Hi,
So here’s a question that there is probably no wrong answer to, just wanted some opinions. I always do my own oil changes in our vehicles. Also, I always buy the oil and filter at our Walmart here in town because they have the best prices on oil and filters. When we had our 2012 citadel with the 3.6 I always used the mopar drop in cartridge filter which Walmart carried. Anyway, we traded for our 2018 citadel with the Hemi. I changed oil in it a couple weeks ago, used Pennzoil platinum full synthetic and a Mobil 1 filter. Well here’s the question just for fun: our Walmart carries the Mobil 1 filter for it M1-113A for 9.97 and also the Mopar MO-339 for 9.97. Which one would you guys use? Both made in USA. Not sure why I used the Mobil 1 this time. I think maybe the mopar was sold out when I bought it. I was examining them this morning while shopping and both seem to be quality filters. One observation was that the Mobil 1 filter was significantly heavier. Probably twice the weight. I don’t think that makes it better, just an observation. With our mileage we put on, I won’t be due to change it again until March or so. So just a question for fun, like I said probably no wrong answer, what do you guys think?

Yes I love Rockauto. Correct you can’t beat their prices. Something to consider. As I said I’m running the Mobil 1 filter now but I know the mopar is good too. Honestly if motorcraft had a filter that cross referenced I’d run it. Wally World sells them for 3.97. And they are very good filters I’ve seen that from running them on my F150 for 15 years.

Mopar...at least during warranty period.
Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a vehicle manufacturer cannot void a warranty because a different brand of filter, fluids, or parts were used unless the aftermarket items is found to be the cause of damage. (I would still avoid Fram like the plague though.)

I usually stick with OEM filters since they are approved for at least the life of the warranty, so they have been vetted. I would never use Penzoil or Quaker State oil since I have never heard anything good about it, but plenty of negatives (usually sludge buildup). I Usually use Valvoline or Mobil1 in all of my cars, but since I need 2 jugs from Walmart for an oil change, I just started using Amsoil, which is a much better oil and only costs me about $10 more than 2 jugs of Mobil (with the Amsoil preferred customer account). They also sell Wix filters, which I know are good, so I just add one to the order and its on my door step within 2-3 days.

I’m still running the Castrol edge extended performance. Seems good, not sure if it quieter than anything else or not. I actually did buy a fram ultra synthetic filter(not sure what they actually call it but it’s their best one) to use this time with my next oil change. I’ll change it in about a month or so. All accounts are that fram filter is really good.

The big issue with Fram was that a lot of their oil filters lack the rubber diaphragm that acts as a one way valve that prevents dry starts; especially their cheapos. The more expensive ones have it, but they are the same price as OEM or premium filter brands, so there is little reason to buy them IMO.

Fram also uses cardboard end caps. Not very good quality imo. I only run Wix filters, their quality is much better. I also run Pennzoil synthetic oil, seems to keep my engines quieter.

This is the fram ultra synthetic oil filter. It is not the cheapo and it is very high quality. It has metal end caps and high quality anti drain back valve. Made in USA. I just decided to give it a try. After seeing videos of it cut apart I have no worries about it.

One thing that made my oil changes a breeze is one of these valves. I tried to find one made in America but the best I could find was one that shipped from America. Coming up on my 3rd oil change since install and no leaks, so it seems to be good quality and the process couldn't be cleaner/easier.
