let me start by saying I am not a fan of "black boxes" that control vehicle functions.... this is 2nd one on this Durango to give me issues. 1st was engine PCM a few years ago.
Had to send that in for a rebuild.
This is on a 01 SLT+ (not sure that matters, but anyhow) with a 360 and 46RE transmission. 274K miles, have had it since I got it with 214K. I replaced the original engine at 258K.

Anyways;
1. I HATE the automatic lock function this thing has, I have tried the procedure in the owners manual several times to try and delete it... that procedure DOES NOT WORK.
It never has since I have owned this Durango. The automatic lock drives me insane.

2. this started 2 weekends ago. For the 1st time since we have owned it the "SECURITY" light came on while driving. Doesnt seem to bother starting/running/driving functions.
Intermittent. Thought it was my key, 1st time I was using it then using my wife's key it seemed fine. Then did it with her key this past weekend (eliminates a problem with my key as the issue)

3. "SERVICE 4WD" light came on along with "SECURITY" light. at same times, never on by itself, only as companion with "SECURITY" light

4. I plugged in my Snap on SOLUS Edge scanner, (current to summer 2020 update) and there was no associated code but while I was sitting in it with engine running the scanner parameters showed "IGNITION KEY IN IGNITION.......... NO" Well then how was it running? I sure didn't hot wire it.
I read somewhere that the CTM disables the TCCM for teh 4WD when it can't detect key in ignition. True?
4b. had 2 codes but no "B" or "P" code but the text associated with codes were "ROM CHECKSUM FAILURE" and "LOAD SHED FAILURE"
I unplugged scanner, shut truck off, went in house for a few minutes came out, started up, no extra lights on dash, 4WD worked.. (when "SERVICE 4WD" comes on LEDs on 4WD switch are dead) We need 4WD right now, today is 1st day roads are clear, just got done with a 10" dumping of snow over this past weekend.... wife called off of work because of bad roads and the 4WD acting up (this is her daily driver)

5. Never had issue with wipers (front or back) in the 7+ years we have owned this Durango. Along with the "SERVICE 4WD" and "SECURITY" lights, the back wiper decided to not work any more and the intermittents on the front have a mind of its own. They stop where they want, we have to put them on low "solid on" for them to work right and we have to turn them "on/off/on/off til we can get them to park where they belong. That started with the lights on the dash I describe above (at the same time) but ever since, wipers still screwy even when those lights on dash, aren't lit.
6. A few years ago I had to replace the engine ECM. Ever since the AC indicator on dash blinks incessantly. I found out that only someone with a damn DRB can go in the computer and shut that off. Some kind of "sweep" test of the doors within the heater plenum. I went to the dealer by work and their "old timer" came out and plugged in the DRB in the parking lot, he didn't remember the sweep test I requested, but instead "seemed to remember" another test associated with the HVAC that he wanted to run... (we saw the request for the "sweep test" I wanted run, he tried them both, and we found a problem with one of the actuators in the rear HVAC, the DRB would not let the truck do the test because of the issue in the rear HVAC). But now ever since, both the AC AND the defrost button blink incessantly. Something else that drives me nuts. The AC does work when called for.

I took the rear HVAC apart, and found a broken door. I found an aftermarket place that makes metal doors for various vehicles, bought and installed them (with new actuators) and took to back for try #2 to get the lights to quit blinking. The codes for the HVAC door that prevented the DRB from doing what I had wanted done/ weren't there no more, but now it still would not kill the blinking..... so I have been putting up with "the blinks" for ~6 months or so.....

we plan to keep this thing til it rots into the ground (its from the South, and is still rust free so that will hopefully be a while) I replaced the original engine and rebuilt the trans at 258K miles.

Now I'm done with the history lesson (thanks for bearing with me) I have some questions. Everything that I am having issue with somehow ties back to the CTM, from what I read at the various forums, and from Mitchell ONDemand.
as far as CTMs;
all I see on Ebay say "2001-2003 Durango" are they "that freely" interchangeable?
I am confused as to how "plug and play" they are. Everything from "plug it in and go" to "it will do the same start and quit routine, as it did when I 1st put the junkyard PCM in a few years ago until I sent that PCM in to a PCM rebuilder to be reprogrammed with my VIN. Still others say that "it will work but just the key fobs won't lock/unlock it, until I have it reprogrammed with a DRB". If that is true, big whup. We have 2 or 3 fobs but I cannot remember the last time we used the fobs. I don't have one on my ring, I think they are in the kitchen cabinet. I can definitely live without the key fobs if that would be the worst of it. IDK who to believe, but we cannot take the chance that I swap CTMs and then this thing won't run. that means someone won't be going to work.

I went to the local junkyard yesterday, and among probably 15-20, 98-03 Durangos, after weeding out the 98-00s and the 01+ that hadn't been left in the yard with windows down and/or doors open or missing (I wasn't laying in a snowdrift to get a CTM) I did get 3 of them. (get while gettin was good, the yard is building up a huge crush pile which they have not done in years) I do not know what sort of problem brought any of them to the junkyard. In fact, I remember following the tow driver to the junkyard with the green 01 on the bed thinking that it was a damn nice looking rig.....what a shame for it to be headed to the junkyard..... I was coincidentally going to the junkyard that day.
I got teh CTM from that 01, PN P05114191AA the 01 has a 360 just like mine.
then I got 2 more from 02s with 4.7s.... both PN P56049073AG. Does engine option have anything to do with CTM application?
I have not yet pulled mine to see what PN is on it. I will try the one from the junkyard 01 1st. If that one works, fine. If not; would one of the ones from the 02s work as I hope they would? Do these numbers supersede to each other? All from the junkyard were 4wd, none were "AWD" (same configuration as mine)

and people wonder why I am redoing a 85 Dodge D150 with a Slant 6 and a carburetor for my nice weather daily driver....
Just a couple weeks ago my wife made a comment how she likes the 4WD switch on the dash better than the lever on the trans tunnel like my 96 Dakota has....
this exact sort of issue proves why the lever on the trans tunnel, is the better setup....no "black box" will keep it from working.

Oh yeah... when I initially bought this truck the "SERVICE 4WD light was on, and that time it was the TCCM, I took the old one apart and it was burnt inside. 7 years and 60K miles ago. I really don't think the issue is there right now, with all the other goofiness, plus the (so far) intermittent-ness of (most of) these issues.
I am a fleet mechanic for the State of Illinois so I know my way around under the hood pretty well....but electronics isn't my strong suit.

PLEASE HELP if you can! Thanks. sorry for the long 1st post..... but wanted you to "have it all" to make an informed recommendation.

Just an FYI. I think the moderators just posted your first post recently today. I didn't see it before today so maybe that is why there are no responses yet. Give it time.

I seem to recall some earlier threads on this, but haven't done a search.

I do know that within a given year, the CTM has to get programmed for the features of the vehicle; the normal replacement procedure is to suck the old config out with a DRB and squirt it into the new one, if possible.

02 and 03 have the same part number in the parts catalog, but 01 has a different number.

yeah I noticed that.... it seemed to show up when I posted it then disappeared.... proofread check by mods or check a new guys 1st post to be sure Im not selling something (spam) maybe?
I made comment under my "intro" post how my post here had seemed to disappear/not show up..... who knows? I just know I'll appreciate any help I can get... I have this issue cross posted, on forums I have been on for years and recently found this one so I thought Id try here as well... I'm just getting frustrated with this thing.... and now (for the 2nd time) it seems to have "fixed" itself, wipers work like they should again and no goofy lights on dash at the moment... for how long?
I think I will make the hour and 1/2 trip to my dealer buddy's this weekend. I want to swap out this module and possibly send in my original for repair if the place that did my PCM can do it.... but I want to be where I have ready access to factory Mopar scammer in case the replacement CTM decides to send everything to go nuts so I aint stranded if it should decide to do so....

Tom... any word on whether any of those PNs cross/supersede into each other???? Thanks for the info that you did provide so far....
I have been thinking of picking up another Durango to get "ready" for that eventual day when this one cant be fixed no more, since the wife likes this one so much..... #1 concern is a good body and frame.... I can handle "most" mechanical stuff, I just hate electrical (though I can usually muddle my way thru that as well)

my 97 dakota with a 318 started having the weird light problem so I spent many hours chasing wires and come to the conclusion that it was the CTM.(Behind dash on pass. side) I pulled the old one and got one on ebay, all numbers matching to a T and plugged it in. Now it will start and run for a second or 2 and die. Done this numerous times. I can plugg back in the old CTM and the truck runs fine, just the same weird light problem. So, I would say they arent very interchangeable. Unless there is something I can do to shut off the VTSS on my truck, I will just tough out the weird light problem.

This is my experience with changing them. If you get one from the same year and the same setup it should work. I pulled one from the junk yard because the security system would go off randomly. The one from the junk yard plugged right in and I haven't had any issues since. I did not have to get programmed at all. It was off a 4x4 but that didnt seem to matter. There is some though that have an ignition lock out and will not work if your ignition doesn't have one. I ran into that problem when changed my dash and left the computer for the new one in.
