I leave mine on?I tried with if off in town and I didn't notice a significan't increase in MPG?

OD

I leave mine off around town. Once I'm in the fast lane on the freeway & cruising along, I'll let it go into OD.

If you don't turn OD off and you're cruising around town at any speed over 40 mph the tranny will be in OD & the lock-up torque converter will be engaged. This is great for mileage (in theory, but not for me.) You see, I don't cruise for very long before I'll NEED to accelerate for one reason or another. If you're all locked up & in overdrive, acceleration response is delayed a little (bad.) If you have held it to 3rd (TQ not locked-up), it's much better. If you plan ahead a little & drop it to 2nd just before you plant it? weeeeee!

If you just use your car to get from point A to point B, let the OD come & go as it likes. It won't hurt anything. Just try not to fall asleep on your commute.

The only time I normally take it out of OD is when I'm towing. The higher RPM's are easier on the engine under load and gas mileage is minimally affected.
With the 46RE transmission, the torque converter normally locks up afer OD engagement. If you have OD OFF, then it'll lock up after upshift to 3rd. It certainly doesn't hurt to disengage OD in traffic, but I'm not sure there's any significan't advantage.

I find a drop of about 1.2mpg with the OD off in town.
And at $2.51 per gallon for premium 91 octane, that's enough for me to want to keep the OD on. Cost me $48 to put in 20 gallons today.
