I have a 2014 Limited Pentastar with the rotary shifter. The car wash I go to is the kind where you put your car in neutral and it takes you through the wash and then you pop it back in drive. However, the shifter won't let you go from N to D without HEAVILY pressing on the brake. When I tap the brake a little and shift to Drive, it doesn't actually shift and it just revs the engine; I then have to go back to N and then back to D in order to move the car. With cars behind me trying to move, this can be difficult and stressful to deal with. Does anyone have an easy way to deal with this? My 2019 Ford Expedition with the rotary shifter has the same issue as well, but to a lesser degree.

My '17 SXT sure doesn't do that, so I doubt what you're dealing with is normal. I use a local "tunnel of love" car wash too, with no such issues. I DO have to press the brake to shift out of drive or park, (as per the manual), but not heavily at all. And I don't have to go back to N and then back to D in order to move the car -- Provided the car isn't in motion and no doors are ajar, of coarse.
I never use those steering wheel shifting tabs though, so if you do, maybe they have something to do with your issue? I dunno.
I keep threatening to take a hacksaw to those tabs, I hate them that much.
EDIT: BTW. love your avatar! (y)

I just want to clear a few things up as my first post may have been a bit deceiving: I do not have to push the brake hard. Just a bit more than a tap. However, ONLY when I do a slight tap and it shifts to drive do I have to go back to neutral. Most of the time this does not happen. And although I do use paddle shifters most of the time while driving, I go to automatic when going through the wash. Thanks for the feedback and keep it coming.

Mines a 2015 and I give it a very slight press, shift to D, and then let off the brake. Lol now that I think about it, not sure how my wife does it!!

I have a 2018 SXT with the t-shifter. I’ve recently been aware of whether I had to press the brake or not when exiting the car wash. There was one time where I thought I did, but then last week confirmed I did not need to in order to shift from N to D. I don’t see how the rotary dial would be that different that it would require you to do so. That seems like that would require a much deeper mechanical difference than just the shifter. I think you should maybe get it checked out.

Does the T handle shifter have a button on the side to depress while going from N to D? Dial shifter is all electronic in that the computer has it locked up from moving unless the brake is pressed.

I don't think my wife's '16 requires the brake to be pressed to move from N to D... I can't really say I've paid a lot of attention though, but I think I'd remember that kind of annoyance.

Hell I can’t put it in gear without starting the vehicle, that’s the same lockout. Even the readout on the dash says to push the brake to switch gears!

Yea, but I think that is just to prevent it from being knocked and inadvertently shifting out of place, whereas the rotary dial can’t really be knocked out of place. I’m not sure if that omission would be substituted with the brake needing to be depressed just because there is no safety button.

From my 2014 Jeep Owners Manual. Has the same T-Handle shifter as Durangos.

Brake/Transmission Shift Interlock System

This vehicle is equipped with a Brake Transmission Shift
Interlock System (BTSI) that holds the shift lever in PARK
unless the brakes are applied. To shift the transmission
out of PARK, the engine must be running and the brake
pedal must be pressed.
The brake pedal must also be pressed to shift from
NEUTRAL into DRIVE or REVERSE when the vehicle is
stopped or moving at low speeds.

The T-Handle shifter has a button on top right to enable movement. I'll try going from N to D without hitting the brake at a low speed. Maybe find a small downhill section to try it out?

The T-Handle is still electric and has the same issue. I know people try to blame the rotors knob for everything, but it’s the Transmission computer controlling everything. the shifters are all just suggestions you make and the computer decides what actually happens
