Hi guys and gals, my name is Joe and I just joined this sight, I have a 2017 Durango Citadel 5.7, I have 30 K miles and I love it. I pull a 1935 Ford street rod on a open 20’ aluminum trailer, I don’t even feel the trailer when towing, and I get 15-16 MPG at 75, anyway enough of the bragging.
My question is about oil and I hate to bring this subject up again, I just moved to SC and found a new dealer, I purchased the vehicle where I lived in FL, always had the vehicle serviced at the dealer, every oil change they used SAE 10w 20 or 10 w 30, they told me that with the 5.7 you should never use synthetic or synthetic blend oil which is fine with me, it even shows SAE 10w 20 on the oil fill cap. I went to my new dealer in SC the other day for service oil change and tire rotation, I never asked them what oil they would use, when I picked my Durango up I noticed on the bill that they used a synthetic blend, so I questioned the service writer, he tells me that there is no problem using it, I told him what the dealer in FL told me and he said he never heard that, I said okay and left, this morning I used my remote start to start the car, as Im looking I see a white cloud of smoke puff out the exhaust the clear up, I drove the car came back and the vehicle sat for 3 hours, I used the remote start again to go out and again a white puff of smoke comes out the exhaust then clears up, now Im curious so I race the engine a couple times and it is clear, this never happened before the oil change. I checked the level to make sure it was not over filled, it was fine. If any one has any input I would appreciate it, my feeling being a motor head is that the thinner synthetic oil seeps a little past the valve guides or rings, then it clears up after it starts. I never had this happen using the regular oil. Thanks for you listening, I know you guys are probably tired of reading about oil issues but any opinions would be greatly appreciated, have a great day

Your original dealer is clueless. Synthetic oil is great for these engines, been running it since day one and always have in all my vehicles. And they weren’t even using the correct weight of oil
Correct!! That’s what I was thinking. What kind of dealer would miss up that info like that. In fact I’ve heard you should only run synthetic in this 5.7. At least in the 18 I got. Don’t know about older ones.

Thanks for the input guys, I took a video of the exhaust today, I determined that I never noticed it in Florida because it's never cold, now that I live in South Carolina the mornings have been in the 30's and 40's, I think it is the cold and the condensation in the pipes when it first starts. Thanks again

You are still using the wrong Viscosity though!

I have been using Synthetic oil in all my cars since 1984 and never looked back; you dealer most be older (meaning stuck in the past) than me and I'm not young in age :)

I run 5W20 Royal Purple in my 2011 Crew, 5.7L since I've owned it. It has 76K miles on it and it still runs great.

Hello Joseph,

Thank you for contacting Dodge Customer Care. We are disheartened to learn of your concern in regards to oil type for your 2017 Dodge Duragno. I would be more than happy to provide you with information.

Based on my information here on my end, the best recommended oil for your vehicle is as you provided SAE 5W-20. Vehicles equipped with a 5.7L engine must use SAE 5W-20 oil. Failure to do so may result in improper operation of the Fuel Saver Technology.

Based on this information it is best recommended to not use synthetic oil in your vehicle.

Thank you again for your email Joseph. At this time we will be closing this case. If you have any further questions/concerns please feel free to contact Dodge directly at 800-423-6343.

Best wishes,
Lauren

I have 2015 5.7 Durango and a 2014 5.7 Charger. I got the Charger first, dealer and personal mechanic said to use 5w 20 Pennzoil as stated above and change every 6K miles if conventional. They also mentioned the MDS needed the right oil.

I too am shocked FCA does not recommend synthetic.

CR:
X 2 on the owners manual being your bible as far as maintenance requirements. I can't imagine why running a synthetic vs dino or blend would not be "recommended" as long as the proper weight is used.

The manual for my '14 5.7L Charger states:

"Engine Oil Viscosity — 5.7L Engine MOPAR® SAE 5W-20 engine oil or equivalent such as Pennzoil® or Shell Helix® is recommended for all operating temperatures. This engine oil improves low temperature starting and vehicle fuel economy. The engine oil filler cap also shows the recommended engine oil viscosity for your engine. For information on engine oil filler cap location, refer to “Engine Compartment” in “Maintaining Your Vehicle” for further information."

It also states:

"Synthetic Engine Oils.
You may use synthetic engine oils provided the recommended oil quality requirements are met, and the recommended maintenance intervals for oil and filter changes are followed."

I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-20 synthetic oil in my Durango R/T. I also used it in my 2013 Durango R/T. Its approximately $23 for five quarts on Amazon. I also use it in my wife's Town & Country now. I previously used Pennzoil Platinum in the T&C, but I got tired of trying to keep some of both oils on hand. It's easier to just use one and the Ultra Platinum is only a couple of bucks more per oil change. Why not go with the better Pennzoil for the price.

Add me to the stunned list regarding Dodge's suggestion NOT to use synthetic engine oil in the 5.7 HEMI.

Not to diminish Dodge Care's knowledge - or access to knowledge - but I'd like to hear an explanation from a FCA engineer to explain why to use a lesser oil.
