Evening folks, first time poster!

ive recently had some engine issues and a check engine light come on; just hit 88k. Some backstory— the car was originally my wife’s and regardless of the amount of attention I try to pay to our vehicles, she treated it poorly. This includes driving 3-5K miles past a due oil change, running the tank dry and just generally being hard on the vehicle. Ever since there has been a tick but I’m pretty sure it’s a rocker arm issue, I’m just not confident in my ability to repair this. Other than the tick though the car has run fine for the last year or so until recently. Symptoms include:
-when idling (park or brake) the car would randomly jerk. There is no dip in rpm with this.
-when gradually accelerating in a higher gear at lower speeds (mine will ride 7th gear @40mph) the car will struggle and shudder until it reaches over 2000rpm or goes into a lower gear
-the first time the car did the shudder the check engine light flashed and has stayed on.

I stopped by autozone and had them pull the codes and the only code coming up is P0302- cylinder 2 misfire. My mind goes directly to spark plugs and since it’s an easy access I took care of that today. And yes, the plug looked like it needed changing so that’s good and the coil visually looked fine, no oil or water on the coil.

the car is still presenting symptoms albeit far less, but they’re still there/check engine still on. Friends with dodges suave mentioned I could be a battery or alternator issue but the car while on with all accessories running is reporting 14 and change volts.

I did notice the throttle body had some residue but I didn’t know if this could be the culprit. I’m going to test the coil (swap 2 &4 and see if it follows) and hopefully that’s all.

Weirdly though, when autozone gives you the code they give you a suggested repair/part and they recommended the rocker arm assembly. This wouldnt cause a misfire would it? All help is welcome and thank you in advance. And before I forget, my main goal other than not breaking down is to polish this turd and trade it in. I’m handy and up for repairs at home but if it needs to go in so be it. Thanks again.

THe 3.6 engines are known to have some rocker arm issues. Being a '15, your D has a 5 year 100K powertrain warranty. If you are still under the 5 year mark, or just over it, I would get to dealer ASAP! This repair could run a couple of thousand, and I am sure you would prefer to have it done for $100 instead of the full cost. If there is a trans issue also, this would also be covered. All the more reason to get it in right away.

Yes:
The warranty is in effect for anyone who owns it, unless it somehow gets a salvage or rebuilt title. Both warranties (bumper to bumper and powertrain) start on the vehicles first in service date. Your mileage at 88K is good, so as long as you are still within the 5 year anniversary of in service, the PT warranty should be in force. In the event it has passed, you could inquire about the dealer making the repairs as a "goodwill" gesture. The valvetrain issue on the 3.6 engines is not uncommon.

Don.....is the 3.6L Valvetrain issue confined to a year range? Like early year 3.6s most susceptible or most frequent? Or is it common across all years including most recent?

DuRon:
That I do not know. I recall a number of 3.6 D owners over the last several months with 13, 14, and 15 models who ended up with some type of valvetrain issue. Rocker arms are what comes to mind. Some of them were under warranty, while others paid $1K or more for the fix.

I have a 2014 Durango sxt 3.5 that I had brought 30-days ago and it has been running nice! Two weeks ago, it started idling rough at idle or a red lights but runs great on the highway. I am now getting occassional P0302 codes and I reset with my scanner and usually it is good for the rest of the day. Some mornings it throws the code or after it is started and I drive for a bit, it throws a code. Took my vehicle to my mechanic and we changed all spark plugs and all ignition coils. Still get P0302 and he thought maybe a bad fuel injector and switched the injector to another cylinder to see if it follows, it did not follow. Cyl 2 stills throws out the code. He thought maybe internal issue/cylinder head...my durango has 54,000 miles and thru carfax (I had the vehicle for 30 days) the cylinder head was replaced at 50000 miles. Not sure where to go to determine what the issue maybe, fyi...I am hearing the rocker arms ticking now, not sure how this would relate to the P0302 or possible cyl head. Amy thoughts would be greatly appreciated...peace! Any ideas? I have seen the various postings, but not sure on next steps besides going to a dealer.

Hi Terence:
Welcome to DDN. Did you get any type of warranty with the vehicle when you bought it? There is a an issue with the 3.6 engines where the rocker arms and lifters wear prematurely, and become noisy. Along the way, the engine can misfire. The remedy can be quite pricey if not caught early on. Even then, the repair is not what I would call cheap.

If the cylinder head was repaired/replaced less than 12mo/12k miles ago, there might be a warranty on that fix if the issue is related.

Hi Don,

Thanks for the fast reply. I have a warranty from where I had bought the vehicle and I need to contact the dealer where the original owner had taken this car for service and including having the cylinder head changed at 50k miles. I seen put on almost 4k miles on the Durango (SMH) and I am aware of there 'ticking' sound on Dodge/Chrysler, in which I had owed a number of Jeep Grand Cherokees, 300c and 2017 Challenger scat pack.
