I know the manual calls for 5w20 and I hear it’s for the mds system to function correctly. But I have two brand new jugs of pennzoil platinum ultra in 5w30 that was going to be used on my last vehicle but it was traded in

Has anyone else ran 5w30 without issue? This truck will always run on full synthetic going forward.

Well if the MDS doesn't operate properly and it knows if its the oil...you'll get a check engine light. As long as you are prepared for that then charge ahead. I don't think anything will be damaged within the engine.
However, personally I wouldn't risk it as the code will be there for FCA to pull if you run into engine warranty issues down the road.

It's not worth the risk to run anything but the correct oil especially if you have warranty left. Find someone who might swap you a couple of jugs of the correct oil, or someone who needs good 30w, and make them a deal.

My preference is to nail the viscosity at the oil changes. But sometimes I don't have the perfect Viscosity on hand when doing monthly checks.

I'm ok with using that oil for that quart you sometimes need to add between oil changes because the first number isn't higher that stock and second number isn't lower than stock.
FWIW, none of my four cars take the same viscosity. One of them is about to cross 250K, the next one has 170k.

Here's my experience. I had no idea what I was thinking. Way back I bought the wrong viscosity 5w30 by accident. Changed my oil and went about my days. I didn't realize it till I was about to do the NEXT oil change, because I had the old jugs of used oil in the garage. I should have just listened to my instincts and changed back to 5w20 right then. I told the story to a few friends and family and they convinced me with their powers of persuasion (bro-science) to keep it 5w30. Long story short, I've been riding this thing for years now with that viscosity and no problems or codes whatsoever. I'm right around 75k miles and she still rumbles like a champ!

My bros seemed to think that if I would have changed it back, the thinner viscosity could have caused a leak. Is there any truth to that? I'm asking because I still contemplate on changing back to 5w20 even after all these years.

Either way, silly move on my part. I was also changing my wife old Accord's oil which is why there's a Fram filter on that receipt. I use to put 5w30 in that car and that's probably where I mixed things up.

Aren't all of the 2nd/3rd Gen 5.7L 5w-20?

The 5W20 for the Hemi did not start in the Gen 2 until some point in 05. My 04 specs 5w30. The MDS started in 05 for the 06 model year. I believe it's been in force since then. I seem to recall a few 05 D owner's without MDS that said their Hemi called for the 20w.

If you're near Jacksonville, FL .... I'll swap you some 5W20 for your 5W30. I use the 5W30 in my old '05 Chevy Monte Carlo daily driver.

Our Durango R/T only gets Full Synthetic 5W20 and my Challenger SRT only gets Full Synthetic 0W40.

If the jugs haven't been opened just take them back to the auto store and exchange them. As long it's the same as the current packaging, most stores are pretty accommodating.
