I’ve owned the DD for about a year and wanted to start taking day/weekend trips with the fam to explore the San Diego area deserts and do some camping.

Background:
I’m an Industrial Designer with a degree in Automotive Design. The Durango was not my first choice in vehicles, but my wife loved it and it checked all the boxes. I loved the WK2 Cherokee and TRD 4-runner. I thought the DD looked like a bar of soap that hung out in running water a bit too long with some aggressive unrefined graphics up front, but I’ve grown to love this thing! The proportions are classic oversized American SUV and I’ve thought it would look best inspired by a more off road capable aesthetic rather than the large American speed wagon on 22’s. No offense to those that have gone that direction, but I just want something with maximum desert ability while maintaining as stock as possible. I’ve been looking into a 3rd vehicle like an old Jeep Gladiator or Comanche that could be a desert beast and handy around our property, but would lack every modern creature comfort for my wife. So let’s see if the DD will be a decent family off road desert camping vehicle.

The Build:
Stock as possible. I’m going with the build it as you break it mentality. First obvious upgrades have been 1. Wheels/AT tires for a more aggressive stance and better traction. 2. Roof rack for more storage. 3. Adding the RT dual exhaust to let her breathe a little raspier and easier. Currently looking for the cat-back RT exhaust after I already installed the rear lower valence. Future expected upgrades are 1. Suspension/leveling/clearance, but wanting to avoid lifting rear end if possible as I want to keep the CG low. 2. Undercarriage protection. Chief stuff looks nice! 3. Hitch. Looking to have rear tow points as well as ability to have a trailer that could serve as a bed for yard projects as well as a getaway basic camping tent trailer. For this I’m thinking of a Dinoot style fiberglass trailer with a rooftop tent build. Probably a separate build thread later this year.

I did a lot of research into the wheels and tires and finally figured out I could save a TON of cash by using Jeep Wrangler take offs in the specific spec I was after. For tires I wanted the Goodyear Wrangler silent armors in 275/45/r17 and loved the Wrangler Recon style wheel. Well after months of searching I found a basically new set with those specs and better yet, the wheels were Bronze from a ‘Golden Eagle’ edition. I added Spidertraxx 1.5” spacers to get a wider track and gain needed turning clearance. I’ve really liked the driving characteristics of the wider track with narrower tire. It’s minimally added road noise and the suspension feels a lot softer off road with the 2+ added inches of tire. Also MPG have not been affected at all, maybe improved?

The roof rack can hold the 31.5” 5th wheel/tire, but am working on getting that spare in the spare tire space below to leave the rack for camping gear.

Just wanted to share as I haven’t seen a lot of similar DD going this direction. The last image is a rendering I did when it was stock. I’m working on blacking out the chrome and hood with vinyl/paint.

Way cool build! Its really handy that with the smaller diameter V6 front brakes you can step down to either the 17" wheels from the JGC Laredo or the Wangler (may need spacers) and run the taller side wall 17" A/T tires. I just wish they would have given the Durango the drive train option of a the 2-spd transfer case with the V6 engine.

Just a few FYI's

The factory offered a skid plate package for the Durango - not sure many were so equipped but the parts are out there.

I know you may not currently want to lift it much more but there is a 2.5" kit out there for the Durango;

I bought a pair of adjustable height Bilstein 5100 front shocks #24-225434 for the JGC (that also fit the Durango) to raise the front end up a bit and level out the rake and gain a small bit of front ground clearance, for me its mostly for winter driving.

If you need a little more front end angle of approach clearance, then you can always remove the lower chin air dam from the front bumper cover.

Thanks Deacon! Yes, I test fitted the wheels without spacers and confirmed they fit and clear all suspension components at full lock, but preferred the look and peace of mind. I'm with you on the transfer case like the JGC, would be perfect!

Thanks for the heads up on the Bilstein Struts! I was completely unaware of that option and looks to be exactly what I want to do! I have an old BMW that I run Bilsteins. Great product!

The lower chin will be coming off with the front chrome delete! I've also been considering a homemade front steel skid that has a little upward return to it similar to a WRX rally style.

I like the Bilstein strut idea @DeaconBlue would they work on an RT?

I'm a touch too low with 275/55R20 falken wildpeak AT3W (31.9") and will rub against the wheel wells when hitting larger dips in the hwy. Camdzine should be okay at 31.5 w/ non RT.

Also +1 on factory skid plates I think they are the same as jeep grand cherokee. Last i checked a full set would cost around $450.

FYI one of the reasons i went RT is because you get the 2 speed t-case from grand cherokee, course the downside is it's about 20mm lower

Right, one of the reasons I went Citadel instead of R/T was I wanted the added bit of clearance.

Camdzine, wheels/tires look really good. I do think you'll end up wanting the 2.5" lift, will add a fair amount of rough terrain capability.

Did some satin black vinyl on the hood with some knifeless tape. Really like how it looks from the drivers seat, and from the outside! Also used Vivids lightest tint on the headlights. Planning to do HID’s soon as to not lose light output. Was planning to cover remaining chrome trim with gloss black vinyl, but have decided to use paint instead. Coming soon. Was looking for a stock RT exhaust system to complement the dual outlet valence I have installed, but now considering replacing the suitcase with a flow master, an x-pipe and some high flow resonated tips, but trying to avoid ricey sounds and want Zero drone. Any feedback would help.

Thanks Green D! I took the D out on some dirt with good amounts of bumps, whoops, etc. it definitely has the low CG ‘planted’ feeling I’m after, but I did feel some tire to front fender rubs on a few aggressive passes. I’d really rather not do the 2.5” RR lift because of the poor gas mileage, and cutting of the strut tower studs. I’m hoping lifting the front 1.5” and rear .5” will give me what I want. We’ll see if lifting the stock suspension with shocks/spacers gives too harsh a ride, if so, the RR lift maybe the way to go after all and could be added in place of the spacers.

I read on Bilsteins site you can order custom valving on the 5100’s. I’m no shock expert, but seems like if I knew I was going to run them with the 1.5-1.75” spacer on front they could better tune the valving to accommodate the ride feel I’d want more so than a off the shelf product.
