Without inviting all the lectures on why you shouldn't do it, has anyone either accidentally or intentionally, run their SRT on 87 Octane fuel? I accidentally filled up my CTS-V with 87 once (while having a brain fart), and though the power was down slightly (presumably due to the shift to the different timing map after detecting knocking), there was no detectable preignition, and it did not go into limp mode (and it didn't blow up).

But in that case I think I put in 12 gallons of 87 in an 18 gallon tank that had 6 gallons of premium, so it wasn't running straight 87.

Curious how the hemi responds to the same brain fart.....

It’s fine, just don’t hammer on it hard. Normal driving and you won’t notice any knock. If it makes you feel better stick a can of octane boost in it.

If you do, drive gently till the tank is pretty low and fill back up with premium. The ECU can pull a ton of timing, but if you knock a hole in a piston (and they’re fragile on the 392), expect a fight getting warranty work.

Unless you are running it to the wall on a consistent basis, I think you will be fine. The engine control systems these days are designed to keep engine parameters in the safe zone so warranty claims are not off the scale. If the system detects knock, it will pull timing until it goes away. I doubt you will notice the difference on a daily basis unless you regularly drive the Autobahn.

As a former Technician I think it will be fine as said as long as your not doing 0-60 pulls and 1/4 mile runs. Normal driving it should be perfectly fine. I wouldn't make a habit of running lower then recommended Octane rating and use what your supposed to use. Sounds like you made a mistake and hopefully that won't cost you any misery. I think you should pay more attention to that beautiful Vehicle you own and give her the respect she desires my man.
I have a R/T and I never ever put 87 in it. I always run 89 and when I'm planning on a track visit I start the cycle of 91-93 Octane. My truck however can run on 87 octane as a minimum but 89 is recommended so I always use 89. Brain fart is pretty funny man. I think she will forgive you since you only did it once. Go fill her up with the good stuff, give her a nice bath and she will forget it.

These things can basically run on toilet water...that said there is a limit to the amount timing it can adjust. The manufacturer recommends 89 meaning it can probably adjust the timing if you throw 87 at and maybe find a little more efficiency if you threw 91 at it. 100 octane wouldn’t probably make you a rocket ship since it stops somewhere at some limit for standard street fuels.

As far as knock....the worse knock enducing scenario seems to be low rpm high gear high throttle pulls so if your worried just drive her in manual for that tank of gas and downshift sooner than you would instead of bogging in a high gear were knock is likely. Also balls to the wall isn’t good anytime and it worse if it can’t knock the timing back enough. If it was shit gas and 87 id worry a little. Just my $.02 I’m sure others know what they know I just know from experience with adjusting timing on older cars to suit the gas available to me

Just a quick correction. I agree with what you’re saying, just want to make sure OP knows that the manufacturer recommends 91 or higher in his. Otherwise, you’re very correct.

I know it gets annoying but, this is why I usually correct guys that post in the SRT forum when they are driving an RT or other model Durango.
The SRT is a different beast.

So let me get this straight....

You bought a High Performance vehicle, designed to run on Premium and want to run low octane fuel to not EVER romp on the pedal and possibly damage the engine? For what again? To save maybe 8 bucks a tank?

Highly trained technicians along with programmers have run numbers not only on this engine but every computer component in this beast...but you want to save 8 bucks. Stop smoking cigarettes or drink 1 less six pack for that 8 bucks.

Why oh why didnt you just buy a regular run of the mill durango? Just sayin....

No, you got it wrong...he said he had a brain fart and by accident put in 12 gal of 87 and just wanted to make sure it would be ok to burn the mix instead of having the tank drained.
I may have misread his initial post but I find it hard to believe he "accidentally" put the wrong fuel in. The buttons are clearly marked with the octane rating when you press the button and premium is usually always on the far Right.

Gosh, I hope one day he doesn't "accidentally" put in diesel.

A diesel nozzle won't fit. But thanks for that helpful suggestion.

As to the rest of your nastiness, it is not worthy of a reply. Do I know you? I certainly have done nothing to you to justify your insulting me or calling me a liar, but have at it if it makes you feel good.

Troll on.

I usually never get involved in this back and forth crap, but I guess I'm feeling lucky today. EMS it sounds like ur going thru PMS with those remarks. For the past 10 years I put nothing but 87 in my beater cars truck etc. So I when I got my SRT I almost made the same mistake as the original poster. Back off and go take some mydol, eat some ice cream and come back with a better attitude.

I agree, to err is human, to forgive is divine...............I hoped this forum would be different...........I see it's the same everywhere......sadly.

I get it both ways man. Some of us Car cars are very passionate about this hobby. As a Former Technician you should always use the recommended fuel. Putting 87 octane in your tank isn't the end of the life of the engine or will void your warranty if you only do it once. Honestly top it off with 93 octane after a few miles and you'll be fine. I don't recommend making 0-60 or 1/4 mile pulls until you re fuel.
Also sometimes reactions like that also are in his head I can imagine is " Man I wish I had an SRT and this dude is just abusing his, I would love and cherish it and give it proper respect". To him I feel he feels you disrespected it and that's why he's hating. No excuse to talk the way he did but I can read between the lines as I'm not all that sensitive to nonsense.
I'm sure by now you burned off most of the tank if not all of it as the SRT isn't that great on MPG. So from this point on you will put 91 or above octane and everyone will be happy.
