SRT Gas Mileage

I know this might not be the most popular topic with SRT owners, but I am contemplating the purchase of a SRT and wonder how bad the fuel economy can be. Is that 15mpg combined number attainable with normal driving if the driver is not hammering the pedal constantly? At 5500 pounds, the Durango is pretty heavy, and if asked to constantly accelerate quickly, I do imagine it can really use a good bit of fuel.
I've got my big boy pants on now, so let me have hear the bad news.

Over 7000 mi my long term average is about 13.5 mpg. This includes about 2000 mi of hwy driving. I usually drive in town, with occasional spirited runs and get about 13mpg’s. My car never runs in 4 cyl mode while in the city as well. I’m guessing if you’d keep your car in auto mode (so it goes in 4 cyl mode) you should be able to average 15mpg. Depends on other factors though like traffic etc

same here....the motor is thirsty... when idling and coasting in neutral the mpg is listed at 50....the srt does not stay in 4 cyl mode long enough to make a real difference...but despite that at least your forum handle will be realized with the dsrt...;)

I made it my new sport and I can get regularly 19mpg out of it.
I even went 20 and above on a drive from Zurich to Genoa which is like 500 miles.

However...don't do stop and go ;-)

I set cruise just 1 or 2 mph below the 4 cylinder threshold, so it usually stays in that.

I even went 20 and above on a drive from Zurich to Genoa which is like 500 miles.

Now we are talking miles and gallons and not kilometers and liters, right? If so, that is way excellent. You are a hyper-miler for sure. I looked on a map and noticed mountains on that route, so do you just leave the cruise on or do you let the vehicle slow down when climbing a hill?

I think you mean the threshold for 8 cyl operation but I get it. I read that the reason Chevrolet didn't decrease the size of the Corvette engine to less than 6.2 liters is because, by doing so, there would be less 4 cylinder operation. So I would think the 6.4 Hemi would be in a similar situation. Anyway, what speed is that in MPH that you stay under?

Have close to 16,000 miles on my SRT, avg around 12.5 mpg. Drive 50/50 highway/street. I drive pretty aggresively so you likely won't get much worse than that. I don't care about my mpg.

Are you talking Miles per English gallon or US gallon?

If English gallon, knock 20% off those numbers to get to a US gallon.

It's US gallon. Before I bought the car,I noticed the difference.
And yes, everything I write here is in US measures.

Yes, the topography of that route is "challenging". If you drive uphill, you should time it, so you don't have to break to much, before S curves and so on.

Bare in mind, Zurich is at about 450 meters above sea level and Genoa of course at sea level.
The meters you can calculate in feet yourselves ;-)

I've had mine since August and I have tried to see what the best mpg I could get from it. It's easy to drive it hard and get the worst.
I didn't hypermile or anything like that.

I drove from Tucson to Payson AZ which goes from 2400 feet to 5000 feet. A distance of about 200 miles. And then returned the same route
using the ECO mode in both directions. Most of the driving was 65 and then some stretches of 75 on Interstate 10. Using cruise to even maintain or hold the SRT
back on the 7% downhill grades and cruise where ever I could on the highway.....I managed a 21.7 on the computer which I always throw away
1 mpg for cumputer error so 20 or over is fine with me.


The rip snorting take off and rush is always there if I need it, but I wanted to see just how much I could eek out on trips. I run the tires at 35 psi,
I'm not carrying much stuff and it is usually just my dog and I.

I've used the foot to the floor a couple of times when passing a truck or bus in limited passing zones and trying the make the pass as short as
possible. My wife looks over at me and I just say, THIS is why we bought the SRT. And then I break eye contact with her for my own safety.

What color SRT do you have?

Is it black?

It's the only other one I've seen running around town on the northwest side.

Its in my description.............granite gray red interior, I'm out on the east side in Rita Ranch area..........spend most of my time in that area...........

Here's my Fuelio log for about the past year. 8900 miles. Average about 14.5. Most of my driving is commuting in rush hour, so plenty of stop and go. Low mileage indicates times where I was able to get on it a little more often. High mileage were out of town highway trips.

Wow, Boseefus, you have to be an engineer or at least a master techie to actually graph the results.

I am pleasantly surprised by all the feedback on this topic and will be moving ahead with a purchase as soon as Dodge gets all their ducks in a row on a Red/Red color scheme.
