I have a 2014 Durango Citadel. I don't believe the Water Pump has been replaced ( i bought used and looked through the service records). Is there anything i can be looking for to let me know if the water pump is starting to fail? I ask since now that the weather is getting colder, when i cold start, i am getting a very pronounced "whining" form the engine for about 1 minute or so. sounds like belts, but didn't know if that could also be related to the water pump? probably just more paranoid than anything but thought i would ask! thanks

They do send "characteristic" signals, but don't always fail the same way. The whining noise could very well be a bad (seizing-up) pump, or signs of a bad alternator, idler pulley, battery, or the belt itself. Keep an eye on your temp gauge.
Sometimes, the engine begins to make a "agel-agel" sound like a diesel at certain rpm, coming from the vicinity of the shaft/bearing on the pump. Grab the pulley of the pump and try to wiggle it. It should not have any "play" at all.
Most times, there will be coolant loss and a wet looking area around the pump shaft and even on the ground towards the final failure, shortly before it "grenades" for good.

What engine? The 3.6 is well known for the power steering pump whine on start-up. 'Specially when cold out.
Yes, I noticed that when I was up in Va on Thanksgiving. I was going to tell the service manager about it at my next PM.
I haven't heard it since, so it definitely had something to do with the climate.

Our '15 Caravan did that. First time I heard it I was certain the pump was failing, but it is apparently a very common chatter subject on the 'tubes. It's loud, worrying, and can't go unheard. But somehow normal.
