My wife and I have been in the market for a durango recently, we were looking at late 2000's models but we found a nice 2011 5.7 Crew with tow package that she and the kids really like. My question is, seeing as how the 2011 was the first year of the new generation, are there any quirks or shortcomings that need to be considered? I know that the 2004-2005 previous generation 5.7 engines had problems with bending valves that was resolved in later years, just curious if there's any blatant issues of that sort with this generation.

what is the mileage on it? what does the carfax look like?
It's got just under 125,000 miles on it. Haven't checked out the carfax on it yet, we're waiting for the dealership to get done checking it out because it was a recent trade-in, but it does have a quarter sized dent in the front-right wheel well fender. It's between this 2011 5.7, or a 2007 5.7 with just under 100,000 miles on it.

Strangely enough, even though I thought that the 2nd gen durangos could pull almost 9000 pounds, the '07 with 5.7 and factory hitch says it can only pull about 6400 pounds, while the '11 with 5.7 and factory hitch can pull about 7400 pounds.

Having an 07 5.7 with just over 100k on it, I can vouch for the gen 2. Of course, it is a generation and 4 years older, which is definitely a consideration. It is a seriously unloved generation, but its' owners are pretty loyal.

I had some issues with mine last year, but this was due to the fact that I had only put a few thousand miles on it over the previous three years, and sitting is not good for any vehicle. In the years I have owned it, it has been a really great vehicle.

Between the two, if it were me, I would probably go for the newer generation model. What kind of money are we talking about?

the 2011 they're asking $16,000 but i'm hoping having about half as deposit (around 8-9k) will convince them to bring it down a couple thousand since it has some scratches and a decent sized dent.

The 07' is $10,000, has a few scuff marks on the bumper but is pretty. I don't have a problem with the 2nd gens (I still think they're better than getting a Tahoe or a Yukon) and the dealer said that he's pretty flexible on the price if we can cover most of it with cash. (I could probably cover all of it with cash, but i'm hoping to do maybe a years worth of financing to help my credit a bit)

Well, I know dealers need to make money but I would hope they're a lot flexible on the price. I got my 07 back in early 2012 (it was just traded in by the original owner). It was in great shape and I paid 10k. It has sunroof, HEMI, towing, satellite, 4wd, DVD, third row, etc so it isn't a bare-bones model. Plus, of course, it is a Night Runner (which means nothing to anyone but me, but it's a sweet rare bird).

My advice, if you're going to seriously consider the gen 2 (and I agree, better than a Yukon or Tahoe by a country mile!!!), I would search for a private party vehicle. I love gen 2's to death, but would not pay 10k for an 07 today. It would have to be something pretty special. Look at it this way- my 07 has the dreaded gen 2 rust on the rear quarter, but that is its' only flaw. It has brand new tires and a lot of new parts on it, 102k miles. I would be lucky to get 5k for it. Without the rust- 6.5 maybe realistically. In other words, you can do better than 10k by a long margin. There are undoubtedly enough on the market for you to find The One on your own without a dealer.

The gen 3 you're looking at may be the older design, but is still the 'current' generation, so their values are still holding higher.

I've actually had a hard time finding the right 2nd gen, finding one that has less than 150,000 miles, is the 07-09 body style, has the 5.7 and the tow package... it's been extremely difficult. Most of the '07 and up models I've found around here that were around $5000 have around 200k miles.

Well, of course, drive what you dig. If you feel the 07 on the dealer lot is going to be the one, that's awesome. I'm not trying to dissuade you in any way, so I apologize if you think I am. I'll go back to just saying that based only on the age and generations, I'd take the newer one, but the gen 2 is a pretty sweet platform too.

I just bought a 2011 Dodge Durango Crew Lux. It's loaded, one owner, only some Stone chips in the front bumper which is to be expected. 115,000 miles, payed $14,500.

Has trailer tow package AM FM CD NAV satellite radio and TV tuner up front in the middle row, it has DVD player has the wireless headphones and remote still in truck.. 3rd row seating automatic dim headlights, automatic wipers you name it ... it has it .. awesome SUV . I Love my Hemi. !

Wow, I can't find any deals like that around here. I've got one with 125,000 miles, a few dings and blemishes, for $16,250, and another one 150 miles away that has 90,000 miles, no big blemishes, and $16,661. I went to the local one (the dinged up one) and told them that I was looking at one in a lot better condition for only $200 more, and that I'd consider buying the local one if they came down on the price about $1000 to make up for the miles and damage, but they weren't interested. So i'm going to go do a bit of a road trip to the big city, and unless there's something preposterously wrong with that one I'm most likely going to buy it.

My Citadel is for sale, they're asking $16,400'ish. It's in Illinois though, idk where you are. Had 105k, just did both differentials and the transmission fluid changes.

my wife and i had a 2011 citadel with the 5.7 Hemi. it was a great vehicle until i hit a deer earlier this year and it was totaled. Had roughly 176,xxx miles on it, and the only issues that came up where the Adaptive Cruise Control (which was covered under warranty) and a water pump that went bad at around 120,000 miles. I was able to replace that myself with no issues.
