I apologize for resurrecting this post from the dead, but I have a question that I don't think has been covered yet.

There are a total of 8 bolts for the factory hitch, 4 on each side. However there are only threaded inserts for 3 bolts per side, not 4. How do you install this 4th threaded insert?

Or can you simply use 3 per side, and call it a day? :)

I only used 3 bolts per side.

On a side note. I ran the factory harness from the rear to the electrical box, and I have the instruction sheet for where the wires go. I have two issues. I can't get the old wires out of the factory connections (under the fuse box). Is there a special tool needed? I am worried about breaking the plastic jaws/tabs that hold the connector in place.

Also, the instructions say to remove the existing wires and tape them back and place the harness wires in their spot. If that is the case, what do the factory wires do and if removing them to replace with the harness wires, doesn't that "disconnect" something that was already there?? Not sure I understand.

Also, since I have been messing with those wires they are now loose in the harness, they wiggle around a lot, so they are setting off my check engine light.

Anyone else do this?? Need some advice.

Thanks

to all the folk who have contributed to this thread, thank you, you have settled many problems and contributed much good advice. i'm looking for some direction here. i have a 2014 sxt rallye v6 that i just bought used. i need to add wiring and the hitch. wiring is my issue. in the previous posts it looks like it was settled that the correct p/n for the harness, if one wasn't factory installed, (mine wasn't) is 82213986AB. when i do a search i can find three different harnesses that answer to that p/n. I've provided pictures of those three.
my questions are: which is the correct one? i'm thinking the 2nd pic is right and gets routed back to the under hood fuse panel, which already has five fused sockets and only needs the harness plugged in. second, what is the preferred routing to get the harness to the fuse panel your help is greatly appreciated.

also, a previous poster asked about the 4th bolt that the factory hitch has, but only the the three from the, ahem, bumper have well-nuts. what do you use for threads?

Everywhere I look, it says Curt 56198 DOES NOT work on Limited... But does for every other model.... Doesn't make sense to me

Can someone confirm if 56198 works on the limited... If not, which one do I need?

I can only confirm that there is something strange about that set and the Limited trim. My first one failed after towing a rental trailer from HD. Got it replaced under warranty. Did not have a chance to tow anything with the new one but at one point I got an error on EVIC indicating a failed light bulb in the rear when in fact everything was working fine. After that occurrence I removed the fuse that comes with the set just to be on the safe side. This was last year and like I said I have not used it since. In retrospect I would have gone with a different brand to be on the safe side and recommend you do the same.

Any other brand r commendations?

I just purchased Harness 82213986AB and Hitch 82214135 from quickparts.com (E-Bay transaction)

Everything arrived in 2 days and was packed perfectly. All instructions, hardware, and new bulged bumper cover.

Thanks for the great videos and help comments. I will be installing as soon as the weather warms up.

I will have the Dealer complete the upgrade by enabling the tow package option per instructions that came with the wiring harness.

Thanks everyone!

Bob

When the dealer flashes the computer to activate the harness and whatnot, does it do something to stop the car from going into ECO mode at startup every time? That happened to mine after I got it back from Dodge, which in my opinion is another bonus. It was annoying to turn off Eco every time I started the engine.

Thanks! I would also like to add:

In the forward upper corner of the fascia on each side where the upper 10mm bolt is.
The fascia is over a plastic stud ... where the bolt screws into.

Get the fascia pulled forward off the plastic stud before yanking off.

3 minute epoxy is your friend if you don't do this as the plastic stud will break off. :wall:

Thanks for this great thread. Next is to get mine on a lift so I can put in the wiring harness.

If you do not want to use the poly rivets .... add the rear factory mud flaps!!!! They use nut clips and bolts in the poly locations.

Bob :D

Looks like CURT pulled that Wire Harness hit from their site and on Amazon etc it says NOT FOR THE LIMITED. When I bought it a few months ago it said it was compatible and last week it starting saying the blinker was out but it was working. Removed the harness and no error message. Plan on calling CURT tonight to find out what the deal is.

Installed a hitch on my 14' using this video as a guideline, very straight forward after knowing how the bumper comes off

however I decided to install the OEM 4/7 pin harness instead and ran it up to the fuse box, the hardest part about that was figuring out how to unlock the "lock" in the connector to install the wire pins, afterwards the dealer charged me a half hour labour to activate and i was ready to tow

Not sure if this has been mentioned already but for the OEM harness, you can use alfaOBD to enable the harness. So no trip to the dealership required.
