Hey guys,

I had the truck retuned and dynoed since I added the Intercooler. I started with a reservoir filled with ice, but it all melted halfway through the tuning process. In addition to adding more ice, some of the other things I could have done to get better peak numbers were putting in fresh spark plugs and a cleaning the air filter. However with all the rain in SoCal, I didn't have the time or opportunity to do so.

I was a little surprised by the numbers, but I was very pleased none the less. While the peak RWHP only went up about 10HP, the peak torque went up over 30ftlbs! And the Torque curve was as flat as a table. Basically between 2,800 rpm to the redline, the engine is at peak torque all the way. Just what I need to make this 5,000 pound beast get up and go. The D runs nice and smooth, and pulls hard all the way to the red line.

320RWHP
375ftlbs tq

The dyno guy down at the Viper Shop told me that with ice my HP number would have been much higher. The engine was pretty heat soaked by the final pull.

Sounds good. I can't wait to get mine all put together and finally post some numbers.

Mark:

Did you dyno it this time in 2WD (w/front transfer case disconnected) or in 4WD?

Marty,

It was 2WD. They pulled the front drive shaft again.

So, Mark, now you have got about 400 hp (vs. 389 pre-IC) at the crank, but after you reconnected the front transfer case, you droped back down to about 268 hp in AWD vs 320 hp in 2wd. :wall:

In either case, I'm sure your D truly rocks but, frankly, with all the effort you have put into getting more hp out of your 360, I'd suggest you consider just tossing the front transfer case and go with FT 2WD. You'll get an automatic 52 hp gain doing that!

BTW, I'm still planning to add a SC to my D too and am learning a great deal from your efforts. Many thanks!

Marty,

I have thought about that, and even did research on what transfer case to get, I think it's an NV242. But I'm"trying", and the key word is trying, not to get caught up in the whole HP numbers game. It's after all a Durango, not a Viper. I don't mind the whole HP "loss calculations" because to me it's really not lost, it's just re-distributed to all 4 wheels. I see it like carrying $20 in my pocket. It doesn't matter if I have one $20 bill in one pocket, or two $10 bills in two pockets, or four $5 in four pockets. I still have $20 on me.

Besides, I know that if I had 2WD, I'd be spinning the rears ALL THE TIME, even with the posi-rear. And like I said in the original posting, I prefer the higher torque numbers. The power is right where I drive, in the low to upper mid range. Pretty much no matter where I'm when I press the accelerator, it moves! To me torque is usable power. Peak HP looks good on a chart, but does no good if you have to run wide open all the time to get it. My truck is a daily driver, not a Trailer Queen destined for the track.

But mostly, for me the Intercooler was about engine longevity. Compressed air via forced induction is hot air, and hot air that's combusted can lead to detonation and pinging. Detonation under boost can destroy an engine. That's why the tuning is crucial. If the mixture is too lean, or the timing is too advanced, you risk detonation. Add hot air into the equation and it's a recepie for trouble. At the Viper shop I watched the techs listen intently for detonation at all speeds while dyno tuning Vipers and SRT-10s. One person would be operating the car on the dyno, while two others leaned over the engine listening for ping.

The Intercooler, as I understand it, takes the hot compressed air, and cools it down before it goes into the engine. Cooler air is denser air, and denser air can carry more fuel and a bit more timing. That's where the additional HP numbers are supposed to come from, the extra timing and fuel. However all I want is cooler air in the engine for a more efficient engine.

Marty, I'm about done with performance modifications. So the next time you come south, let me know. I'll let you take it for a real long drive.

Great Job Mark

Hey Mark Great Job!
I agree the intercooler gives you a little more HP but the engine life is dramatically increased. Although I NEVER see a Supercharger in my future I commend you on your efforts.
Thanks for the Play by Play as well!

No problem Steve.

I think that's why we come to these forums, to share our experience with what works and what doesn't work.

I agree about the reason for the forum, but I have got an intense need for speed and have the tixs and traffic stops to prove it.

So, I have been eyeballing an SRT10 and may just get one to solve that problem. It's 500hp at the crank with a manual 6 and 400 useable hp at the 2 rear wheels. I don't plan smokin' it? makes you slower off the line, but I'll get it to move. :bugeyed:

Only problem will be where to park the D, if I get it. I have no plans on selling it and I only have a 2 car garage with a motorcycle, m/c trailer and Toyota MR2 slot car in there already. ;)

It's like they say? the guy with the most toys wins. I have no chance winning, but I'm going to have fun trying. :D

Hey RT, nice truck! I was wondering why you chose Pax over KB? Just trying to get your opinion on the matter cuz I was just eyeballing the KB site and they seem to have a nice kit. Thanks, Mike.

Mike,

I went with the Paxton because it's the system that the Fastman recommends. A lot of other guys run it too.

Here's a link to my car domain site. It may explain more.

Hope this helps.

Great story about you and your truck. Have you taken it to the track for some time trials?
No not yet.
I hope to some day.

Ok?then what have you beaten? F-150 Lightning? Vette? GT's? Hopefully all other trucks? Can I get a hint?
LostMember,

I don't race my Durango on the street, although I've had ample opportunity. My racing days are long behind me, some 25 years behind me. I'm 45 years old and want to see 46 this year. I have got better things to do with my life then to risk spending it in traffic court or behind bars. I'll take it to the track one day.

Like my CarDomain site says, working on the Harley and the Durango was all about therapy, not race preperation. After watching my paren'ts pass away, I learned that there's more to life than accelerating it's pace.

Mark,

That's so refresing to hear. Street racing is street racing and it's dangerous. That's all there's to it. I get mad when the press or people call it drag racing. I'm a big NHRA fan, have been since a kid. I'm sure you all have seen local tragic stories of people racing, crashing and killing innocent bystanders.

Here are two in today's news?

Please be safe out there?

Here's another link about street racing.

Well I guess I'm misunderstood. I didn't mean street racing. I meant when the light turns green, who's first to the speed limit? I can't see putting all that money and time into a machine and never turning it on, hobby or no hobby. Anyway, I'm sure someone else has a similar set-up or can guestimate performance. Beautiful truck, I'd love to whip that engine for all it was worth!
