I have a 01 AWD and have been having front end problems. I recently installed a new front drive shaft but now I'm getting some vibration from 20-40mph. Someone suggested to remove the front drive shaft. One of my friends did this on his 4wd and incountered some problems so before I took it out and started to drive around I wanted to make sure it's alright to do that. Thanks

Should be ok just to resolve your vibration issue
several have done it to try and save gas (which it didn't) hopefully it'll help isolate the problem

Yes you can. There have been a couple people that have done this in the quest for better MPG. The result, which they were told a head of time was nill. Look up posts from R/T Mark. He removed his shaft in his R/T. Now you do have to check. I believe he said he had to put it into 4 HI with the shaft to remove to get it to go. I didn't understand why but that's what you may have to do.

Neil is correct
I removed mine for a bit,Drove to Chrysler Nationals out east
No better gas mileage
Better SMOKE shows
You do have to shift to 4X4 high

In AWD the system must send power forward first then add in the rear drive in 4wd It locks the case

Like everyone else said, it's totally fine to drive without the front shaft installed. I haven't had mine on for about 4 months now (although with winter coming soon, I better get 'er done!.) If you do figure out why you were having that vibration, let me know, as I was thinking of ordering that same Autozone shaft, but I might hold off a bit if it comes with added vibration.

I'm going out on a limb here and suggest you check the alignment on your shaft when you install it. I haven't been under the front of a 4x4 D but if the driveshaft installs like the rear, somewhere in the assmbly there are the two clamps that wrap around the U-joint cups when you install it on the pinion (the other two will be pressed into the driveshaft.) The slightest missalignment can cause vibrations. I did this on a Dak several years ago. I had the u-joint cup sticking out about 1/16 on one side and flush with the other. Horrible low speed vibration. Went back underneath and moved the cups to where they were sticking out the same distance, no more vibration.

I remember reading that on somewhere else a long time ago. What you describe essentially has the driveshaft out of balance
