So I was just looking at my racetrack light in the back and see condensation forming inside the passenger side by the tailgate gap. Where are people putting the weep hole so that the condensation evaporated but no new water got in there?

Pulled these from the Facebook page.

If you remove it drill as follows with a tiny bit.

If still on the vehicle drill in the following areas. Use caution not to hit the body with the drill.

What DurangoFreak said, with two additional cautions;
1; This procedure will void any warantee you may still have on the assembly.
2; The bit used should be 1/8", or smaller and not be allowed to penetrate more than a 1/2" to avoid hitting the LED arrays, or their PCBs.

my lights and licence plate light went out the other day any thoughts on that much thanks
I had water pool on the passenger side. So far it has taken out the bottom right section of LED lighting, the right hand license plate light and freezing/thawing has caused a large crack in the lens. If posts in this forum are any indication, there are some major flaws in the design of the racetrack lights. Yet warranty doesn't cover lights. Has anyone had success getting this dealt with under warranty?

It’s hit or miss on if it will be covered. A good dealer will replace it but some have reported having to pay.

Have you all complained to Dodge yet? I was just on there chat.....................
Image
Areti: I appreciate you bringing this to our attention, Ray. I don't see a recall related to this on your VIN. We do rely on confirms issues and not general online complaints to third parties for recalls. If this is a confirmed issue across the board a recall will be announced and letters will be mailed to all affected owners.
Image
Ray Johanson: Ok so where should I point others to complain then? I know a good many have contacted you guys
Image
Ray Johanson: I know there is no recall for this issue already, I and others are trying to get one created

Areti: You can direct others to this chat option or to call us at 1-800-992-1997.

Good luck there have been many complaints over the years and nothing. I know when it happens to mine I’ll be raising hell.

I will be pissed if this happens on my 18. Had my 14 for 4 years, and never had an issue. Would like to think my 18 will hold up like that one did.

Checked mine they have moisture it looks like this was designed to fail. I'm going to drill weep holes hopefully the air can circulate and keep them dry water and leds dont mix well. It would most likely last for the lifetime of the vehicle if it was sealed. My D sits in the driveway with the tailgate at a southern exposure so the sun light probably helps dry them out. Time will tell but surely we should keep this active due to the replacement cost

I'll do one better. Here's a pic of the 10mm lower bolt in and out. These are accessible with the lift gate up. Last time when I got water in my center racetrack I pulled the bolts and about a half cup of water came out. Not taking that chance again

If water is getting out through that bolt hole could it also be getting in through that same hole? Every picture seems to show the problem in that same spot on the assembly. Was there any type of thread sealer on the bolt? On a side note that is the exact same bolt used to secure the scoops on the performance hood...LOL

That and it won’t be “tampered” with so they can’t deny coverage. Just put it back in and drive to the dealer.

I did the same as RangoLimited about a year ago, took out one bolt on each side, no problems since.

So, not that I have the issue, but do you leave the lower bolt out and never put it back in? And if so, does it vibrate or rattle a bit while driving? And one last question, in regards to water, will rain or washing it, get into the hole and leak on the inside the truck, or in the tailgate itself? If yes to water leakage, maybe a rubber stop in the hole on the outside, if you can get one in there, could maybe prevent it from happening. I've seen the videos of pulling the bolt and seeing the water pour out from inside of the tailgate. That's where I was wondering if it wasn't plugged up, would water get inside the truck or not.

Never saw anyone ask or comment on any of this, and I am just curious what to look for and maybe fix if it does happen.

I have left them out, no rattles, no rain or water from washing gets into the race track or inside the cargo space.

Cool, I figured it was fine, but you never know. Thanks for the reply!

No water or rattle issues here either and I took them out and left them out. Not sure how many bolts hold the racetrack taillights in, but it's more than 4. Also, those lower bolts are outside of the hatch seal, so no water inside the truck.

#35 ·
That's true I forgot they are outside the hatch seal, that would keep any water out if it did happen to leak. I am glad to hear no one has any rattling going on too.

I just had my lower drivers side taillight start flickering and then the LEDs went out. I looked closer and saw about an inch of water in the tail light. I am going to pull the bolt later but in afraid the LEDs are fried. How hard is it to change out the middle bar? I see they are about $700 online, ugh.

#36 ·
I honestly can't remember what the YouTube channel I saw it on was called, but he said they run about $1100. This was the quote from the dealer.

If this were to happen to mine, I would leave the water in there & get to the dealer & demand they replace it under warranty.
Burned out light bulbs are not covered, but this is a defective component that caused the LED's to short out !
