Well, at just over 30,000 miles the water pump has started to go. I've been listening carefully for it as i knew it was common. Started hearing a slight squeal at startup and when idling. Dealership verified the bearings are bad so there it sets. All parts are on back order, they said it could be a one month wait. Thankfully, we have a beater car to use, but it has 180k and not the best for winter driving and definitely don't feel great about my wife and 6 month old son driving around in it.

It is really not acceptable to have a failure prone part that requires this long of a downtime. If this was our only car or we didn't have a backup, this would be a huge deal. Dealership has no loaners available, And i don't believe the warranty offers much for rental allowance ($35 a day for only 5 days).

Anyone else have luck getting a water pump faster? Is there a more expensive, better aftermarket water pump that i should just buy the part myself and work a deal for free labor?

It will be covered under the 3 yr/36k, but i also have the lifetime max care warranty.

Call around to your local dealerships. I had a local buddy that took a month to get his done. I went to a different dealership and they had them on the shelf and mine was done next day.

I like the 6.4 pump option. Do you know the differences between the 2 water pumps?

This is the only local dealer. Next closest is probably 30 minutes. I'd also rather not drive it anywhere considering it is at risk of completely failing.

it's common? I don't think I have seen any threads on this,

Do a search for "water pump" and you'll find a few in the 11+ and 14+ section. Also some threads in the Jeep WK2 forum. I think there was one a while back that had coolant leak on the floor after his went out.

Considering the parts have been on back order on a few different occasions, and they've superseded the original part # multiple times (i think they started with AA and are now to AD or AF), i'd call that a "common problem" for these newer 5.7s. Might not be a bad thing to add a sticky about these water pump signs/symptoms/failures.

Mine started as a slight surging/oscillating growl sound at idle, which i didn't think sounded quite right, but had no reason to suspect was an issue. Then i could hear a slight squeal, mostly intermittent, at idle. Mostly could only hear anything from outside the vehicle, not from within. I think someone else posted a video clip of a squealing sound, and mine was similar to that.

Once it's fixed i'll be able to report back for sure if the growl was due to the water pump or just how these new hemis sound at idle. My gen 1 hemi does not have any growl, just the tick and broken exhaust manifold bolts (another common hemi problem, at least in the pre-09 5.7s).

It's common.

They put in an aftermarket pump to get me back on the road way back when mine failed; they got an OEM pump in but I didn't get around to having them put it in for a few months.. so 'my' OEM pump was gone.. but it only took them two days to get one.

Only difference in the 6.4L pump is that it has a pipe-thread for the oil-cooler fitting; otherwise it is identical (in fact, some aftermarket suppliers only have the 6.4L version, and they give you a plug for the cooler port).

You can see the plug in the attached pic

Do you know what the most up-to-date part number is? I want to make sure i get the most up-to-date version, not a 30k failure prone older one.

I asked the service department if i could source an aftermarket one, but they said then the warranty wouldn't cover it. I think that's BS. Its my vehicle and i own it outright. If i want to replace a crappy OEM part and replace it with an aftermarket one (which may actually be the same supplier anyway) then let me buy the part, and you do the labor under warranty....but no.

My wife and i really like our Durango. I just don't want to deal with worrying about water pump failure every 30k miles. Planning to own this car for a while, which is why i purchased the max care warranty.

I hope I have no dog in this this kennel with my 3.6L, but this topic bugs me.
The actions they've taken to address this show what a complete failure this business model is!
No wonder car makers have trouble staying in business so often!

It's very common for dealerships to hoard some parts. Have to find which one is in your area. They're out there!

Mine is a 2015. 25k miles. Dealer has put me in a rental Grand Cherokee because they have a lead time of mid March before they have a part. Absolutely ridiculous. I have called around to dealers in a 75 mile radius. No one has one.

My dealer got approval from FCA to put in an aftermarket and then later put an OEM in (which they did last month)..

If your dealer's service manager has a spine, s/he can probably get the same thing approved.

My water-pump was replaced at around 45K miles. It smelled like coolant. Went in for oil change and they said to replace water-pump. Dealer had the part in stock. Appeared that the tech removed some of the front cladding to access the front of the engine where the water-pump is located. How can I tell? Misaligned fittings and missing securing tabs. Covered under Maxcare warranty.

Does anyone know the difference between the water pump for the 5.7 with oil cooler and without? The water pump for the 5.7 with oil cooler is $100 more, but they look identical on the parts diagram.

It has an extra port for the hose that goes to the oil cooler.
My dealer used it on my 5.7L and just plugged the port.

If you are paying...go to Rockauto and buy this Gates pump.

http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=8101484&cc=3310190&jsn=410

It works on both and comes with the plug so if later you want to add the engine oil cooler you can.
Plus Gates typically is high quality.

MARCH???? I still haven't gotten a date yet, but March would be unacceptable. Dealership gave us a loaner base model Chrysler 200, so not exactly an equivalent replacement for my wife who no longer has an AWD SUV with heated steering wheel and seats for winter driving.

I suggested the 6.4 pump and they were going to look into it. It is a smaller, local dealership, and don't want to be hard on them. T

Got a call from the dealer today. She's done! So it ended up taking around 15 days for part number 5038668AD.

They had checked other dealerships, and no one would give one up. Anyway, happy to have it back in the stable.
