To start ,sorry for any spelling mistakes but english isn't my first langauge.
Maybe I'm easy in a panick but it now happened 3 times in 3 weeks
that my automatic gearbox is doing something strange.
It happens not all the time but it seems a little bit strange to me.
When my car almost stops (3 or 5 miles a hour) and I accelerate a bit it seems that the gearbox isn't connected to a gear (1 th or 2th)
It feels like the car is for 2 seconds in the neutral position
and doesn't pull up.
After 1 or 2 seconds the car gets the first gear and drives again.
Can it be that the car is switching from 2th to 1 gear or that it's just inbetween.
Again it doesn't happen all the time but it worries me a bit.
My car has 50000 miles on the clock so that shouldn't be the problem

Thanks for your time

How's the trans fliud level/condition, and when was the last time the transmission was serviced?

Does it feel like it's in neutral (engine revs freely, then the RPM drops when the gear engages) or in too high of a gear (engine RPM increases after the gear engages?)

The transmission had a flued change 500 miles ago
and got a new filter.

It feels like when you drive a car with no automatic transmission but a manual transmission.
for 2 seconds it feels like push down the pedal from the clutch
and then you take your foot of the clutch.
Can it be that my shifting-handle from the automatic transmission
has to be adjusted?

Did the behavior change at all when you had the fluid changed (did it do this before the change?)

Did they do the required band adjustment when they changed the fluid?

could be the trottle cable needs adjusting? There are specific instructions for this? I have attached a file that talks about the adjustment on a Ram, but it's identical to the one on our D's? I know because I've had to make adjustments to my 99? Hope this might help a little?

If have been to the garage who refreshed my gearbox fluid and
the oil level was to low.
They didn't fill it to the correct level the last time.
The garage owner told me that that should have been the problem.

You may also want to confirm with the garage that changed your transmission fluid, that they used the correct fluid. I forget the exact type of fluid our transmissions take, but it's different than the regular old fluid most garages keep in stock.

Edit: You want to avoid Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) with Dexron. You want to use ATF+4. This is what's required for my D. I'm assuming that yours needs the same. Please make sure you comnfirm this with someone else who has the same transmission as you (I have the 4.7L.)

Or you can use a synthetic like AMSOil ATF or Redline C+? both are compatible, but yes, as Doug said, NO ATF with Dexron!! Not sure, but would imagine you could get ATF+4 over there at a stealership? not sure how readily available AMSOil or Redline are in Europe?

Front and rear diff's are the same? 75W-90 is what you want and synthetic is the way to go? AMSOil, Redline, Royal Purple, Mobile 1? all good?

Transmission

Jeepie,

I had this same problem about a year ago. It was just before my transmission went out completely. I'd take it to a transmission shop as soon as possible. Without having the bill right in front of me I can't say for certain which part self destructed sending metal into the torque covertor and ruining that as well. I'll sum it up this way?write a check in the neighborhood of $2500

OK, before we all panic, his fliud level was low. This is a perfectly reasonable cause.

He should use ATF+4 or perhaps ATF+3, but the 46RE tranny in his D isn't as sensitive to fluid as the (5)45RFE that sits behind the 4.7L

So we can just hope he's going to come back and say "Yup! all set!". and if not THEN we can panic.

The gearbox shifts oke now,
it was just that there wasn't enough oil in the transmission.
Thanks all for your concern.
To be honest I don't know with what kind of oil they refilled
my car but it's a Dodge dealer so I think it's alright

Could still be the TC?

Had the same here. Fluid change fixed it for a little bit then the Torque convertor blew. It behaved the same when the TC blew as it did earlier when I had the low fluid and changed/filled it. TC took tranny and radiator with it to the tune of $3100. Dealer acknowleged it's a common problem on Chrysler trucks, except the Ram. If the symptoms start again I'd have them check.
