Hello everyone, I'm new to this site. The guys over at moparts.com said I should ask this over here, so here it goes.

I'm looking at purchacing a 2000 Durango, 4x4, 4.7L, leather, all that fun stuff. It had some body damage in the past, enough to total it (no frame damage), but all this has been fixed. I know the guy that has owned it for the past few years, so I trust him when he says it's in good shape even with its nearly 180,000 miles. This is really the only car in the area where I live that both my girlfriend and myself can agree opon. She'll be driving it when I'm not needing to tow something.

I intend to do some mild landscaping work out of this, and will be towing about a 6x12 trailer (rated at 3500lbs, so nothing TOO serious) with it a good amount of time, which means I'll need to add a receiver hitch to it and possibly a front brush guard and winch. It also has to double as a (second) family car as well. Most of the time I'll probably only be towing my rather small riding mower and pusher.

I have never owned a D before. I know I'd probably do better with a truck, but it needs to serve a lot of needs, INTERNAL space being one of them. I also tend to drive about 30 mins or so on the interstate, but probably not towing anything.

Do you guys think this would work good for my situation? How are they on towing power? How well do the transmissions hold up? I like to go off the beaten path from time to time, so how well does the 4WD work? I don't intend to be towing cars with it or anything, but could I without much alteration?

I know that's a lot of questions, but I plan on possibly buying this tomorrow. Thanks for any info!

You should be fine with that D.

If you found a 2000 with the towing package included, it'd have the hitch, an extra oil cooler and an extra transmission cooler and the larger 5.9L with a towing rating of 7500lbs+. With your ligher use description, the one you're looking at should be fine too.

What to look for? the front ball joints were recalled. Make sure the recall has been done or get them replaced because the originals simply aren't real good. Go back in with greasable Moog BJs if possible.

On the transmission, get it serviced once every 36,000 miles along with the both diffs. If it's sound now, and you get it serviced when you get it, you'll have no problems. NEVER flush the tranny. Drop the pan, change the filter and replace the fluids with actual ATF+4 and Mobil1 75W90 in the diffs (or similar.) Use a good tranny shop because it's 1/3rd the price of the dealer even when you bring in your own Mopar ATF+4 and Mopar filter that you had to go buy at the dealer. Dealership service with materials is $600 while tranny shop without materials is $135. The shop will claim their house blend and house filter are just as good. They're not. Go get your own.

Other? change the coolant also when you get it and again each 36,000 miles. Our heater cores go bad if this isn't done and it's a difficult repair (requires one to remove the dash.) Upgrade your pads and rotors because the '98-02 Ds have slightly undersized brakes for a truck of it's size. So are the shocks, so a good set will do you wonders. Get the Rancho adjustables since you want to go 4x4ing.

That's about it. Service it and the truck will last and last and last.

As for $5000 for a totaled but repaired vehicle, well that's your call. Somewhat high IMHO for something you're not sure of with the damage. If it was hit in the rear, that's one thing. Up front, well that's another. I have seen them sell non-totalled as low as $1500 with simple repairs needed but the seller didn't know to $4000 and un-wrecked at $4000-$9000 just depending on the condition, seller, etc.

Good luck. I hope you come back after the buy and visit us often.

P.S. I have a factory hitch I'll be selling soon. Where are you located?

Thanks for the reply!

The car was totaled simply because it scraped a pole in a parking lot at low speed, evidently the woman got out of it and it was running :.) There's a complete repair list for that wreck, the insurance totaled it cause so many body parts needed to be replaced, pretty much the whole right side of the truck. It was the fender, both doors, and all the glass on that side. but you'd never know it now.

One of the things is that I'm kinda on a short timeline, it'd take forever to explain, but I HAVE to have a truck by then end of the week that's ready to pull my trailer. I live in a rural area and most of the trucks around here what are 4x4 aren't worth buying. I have been interested in a D for years, and this is the only one that's good enough condition that I'd buy it, but not out of my price range.

I'd love to take that hitch off your hands, but I live in East TN, outside of Knoxville. Also, as I said eairler, I pretty much have to buy this thing tomorow and have it towing something within a few days.

Any suggestion on actual part #'s on those shocks, brakes, and other stuff you mentioned?

Gotcha. Just follow the above suggestions and you'll be fine with it.

If she can wreck a truck and jump out while it's running, she'll happily take $4000 CASH for a salvaged title when you wave it in her face as 'all you have with short notice' :)

As for Knoxville? you're 15 days late, I just drove through there TWICE.

Nice pics, I'm in Gatlinburg about every weekend. I'm planning on a move to Townsend in the near future. I have been all over the world and I don't think I'd ever move out of this area.

The guy that ownes the car now has had it for two years since it has been rebuilt. He really wants $6,500 for it, the $5,000 cash offer was kind of a take-it-or-leave-it on my part. These kind of trucks sell very high in my area, and I need one quick, so oh well! If nothing else, it gives me something to work on on those long weekends.

I live in Harriman, you have to pass right by it to get those places you mentioned.

I actually got to drive the D today. When I went there yesterday the guy was about to close and it needed a new battery, so I had to wait for the road test. I was wrong about the mileage it has about 113,000 not the 180,000 I originally thought. From what you guys have said in other posts it appears to be the SLT+ with the leather and good sound system. It's black and has nicely tinted windows, not sure if that's stock or not. The tires need to be replaced, but they're wearing nice and even. The engine isn't missing at idle or mid-high rpms, and still seems peppy, less power than I was expecting, but still ok. The brakes work pretty good, the ABS seems to kick in at the right times. Also the 4WD seems to be functioning nicely. There's not any rust that I can tell, but there's a small bad spot on the paint on the left fender and the grill seems to be loosing paint in places. The truck seems to be completely stock, leaving me lots of room for mods.

Is there an easy way I can tell if the recall on the ball joints wherever done? If not where do you reccomend I get the new ones?

IndyDurango -> Any suggestion on actual part #'s on those shocks, brakes, and other stuff you mentioned?

I can't wait to get ahold of it. If everything goes as planned I'll be driving it home tomorrow (Wednesday.) Wish me luck!

Secret rust? pop the hatch, get up under the open hatch, turn facing away from the inside of the D and inspect the lower lip edge of the hatch. Rust? If not? are there still clear stickers over the weep holes? If so, remove the stickers ASAP.

Shocks? I run Bils so a Rancho guy will need to chime in.

Brakes? avoid EGR, for all they have good, other stuff sucks as does their customer service comittments. I'd suggest you try (by reputation and not personal experience) Baer DecelaRotors and Bendix TitaniuMetallic brake pads.

You can search the forums on all that stuff. There are probably dozens of referrences.

We have a few other current Mustang/Durango owners here at the DOC.

As for me, mine was a '73 Mach One rust bucket, blown 302 replaced with a '70 Gal 500 351 Windsor. Boy was THAT a long time ago.

Sort of the nature of the beast, with the 4.7. There are lots of mods available to make it a bit more respectable (I'm ducking behind my desk right now)?lol

Didn't you have an AMC Gremlin, too?

I'll second that until you add cams or a program of some sort. In fact that's exactly what I said about the power in the first Durango I test drove (02 4.7, green?)

Hey!

Actually, yes I had two AMC Gremlins. My first car was a '70 Gremlin and my second was a '73 Gremlin. :cheesy: My third car was my '73 Mustang Mach 1. All three cars were YELLOW

IndyG <--- saying nothing 'bout the monster 4.7l V8s. My Gremlins were both in-line straight 6s (232ci on the '70 and 258ci on the '73 and I blew up the 302ci stocker in the Mustang)
