So its been weighing heavy on my mind to trade my 17 durango. It has 10,500 miles and in great shape. Except things are starting to go wrong too fast too early. The transmission has been making a huge clunk from second to first. Almost at every stop and its just driving me crazy. My driver side chair started to make a creaking noise. Leather in driver side chair starting to wear as if the car is a couple years old. So my question is how much will i get for my trade? I owe 41k on the durango. Thats with gap insurance. Do they refund me the balance? When trading in do you pay full taxes on the new car? Ive never done a trade in so im kinda lost. My car is a 17 rt blacktop with technology package, sunroof, captains, tow hitch. Im planning on taking it to the dealer for them to look at it tommorow.

I can answer some of this.

My chair made a creaking and popping noise when I had the lumbar set at a specific spot. One little tiny bit less or more, and all is well. Don't be afraid to try that.

The transmission clunk is a warranty item, and should be given to a dealer to figure out. When it doubt you can always pull the battery terminal, let the system reset, and then relearn.

I'd like a picture of the leather in the chair. If you have the Napa leather group, it should be full-aniline leather and therefore and cracking or other aging should be a natural look thing, and there should be no chipping or flaking of the top coat because there is no top coat in this type of leather, and a leather cleaning and treatment should improve the look. If it is semi-aniline (non-Napa type), then warranty should be good for a while on this item, and would cover a replacement seat cover and the labor if it is a defect.

The part I know about directly is how GAP and other products work from the finance dept. You can either trade/sell, get the proof of payoff letter and walk in to the dealer and get a check cut to you (in usually 4-6 weeks), OR you can ask for those to be returned now and the money difference will reflect in your principle of your loan.

For Nevada, there is a tax credit of the difference. Also keep in mind, you want to claim taxes on your IRS tax return as a tax-deductible thing, which should be universally applicable across all states.

I'd recommend, as badass and expensive as this car is, give the dealer (or maybe a second one if this one can't do the job) a chance.

Please upload pics of your concerned seat parts when you can

Wait. Are you saying that GAP insurance will pay for a deficit on a TRADE? I seriously doubt that. GAP insurance is to cover a deficit in the event of write-off due to a loss (accident or other similar issues) not a voluntary trade-in. If this were the case everyone would buy coverage, drive the car for a month, and trade it in for a new one. What you're describing is like an actuarial singularity - can't happen.

Agree that the OP should at least give the dealer a shot while it's still under warranty.

I was referring to the balance on unused time say the loan is 72 months and gap is 720. You use it for 12 months. Are you entitled to 600 refund or is that money lost?

GAP only covers losses due to an accident (or something similar) while the loan is still upside down (you owe more than the write-off value).

Say you owe $40k on the loan. The vehicle gets totaled. Most insurance companies will only pay the actual value of the vehicle in a write-off situation), say KBB value is $30k. The GAP coverage writes you a check for $10k.

There is no GAP insurance that I'm aware of that will write you a check for a trade-in loss. You are volunteering to trade it in. Insurance never pays for something you do yourself voluntarily (you burn your house down, commit suicide, try to sell your house for less than it's worth, etc.). No insurance company would ever stay in business is it worked like this.

If your dealer told you this is how it works then he lied. Not a little white lie mind you a bold-face took advantage of you go to hell kinda lie.

I agree with the other responder, you would only have to pay sales tax on the difference on a trade.

Pappy maybe you dont understand what i mean. Im asking if the gap insurance will refund me the unused time. Im not saying i want them to pay the balance on the loan. I understand what gap insurance is for. Im just wondering when you cancel the policy do they refund you any money for the remainder since you wont need the gap insurance, therefore wont be needing their services.

Heres pics of seat .

Sorry you are having these issues on such a new vehicle. This is exactly what the warranty is for though. Unless you have a REALLY good connection at a dealer, or hopefully the dealer you bought it from, you are gonna loose a bunch of money trading it in. The Durango is a fantastic vehicle for what it is. Find yourself a dealer that appreciates its customers, and let them make it right for you?

To be honest, I have the exact same issues, along with a plethora of others including needing a new alternator at under 10k, rear and front A/C expansion valve replacement, and a new, but faint, high frequency grinding noise while shifting through low gears. I love this thing too much to trade it, so I'm going to ride the wave for now. The hard shifts happen to me as well, and they definitely are annoying but I would assume a "re-learn" could help solve this. As for the seats, it's a very common occurrence from what I hear and mine look the same way at 13k and have since at least 6-8k. I use leather conditioner on them on a regular and proper basis as well. Take it to the dealer, they take pics, send them to FCA, and then they will either approve or deny the request for new seats. It's a very simple process. It is starting to seem like these 17's are having more problems everytime I log in here...:???:

Yes i will try the leather condition. Hopefully the transmission will get sorted. I plan on taking it when i get a day off. I cant stand to lose 8k on a trade. Ill be driving a crv for the price of a durango lol. I had a 02 accord that did the same 2 to 1st gear thump i guess its triggering bad memories. I had to pay 3k eventually for a tranny. But yes this is different its under warranty.

Just hate the thought of paying so much money on a new car to avoid the exact things im going thru opposed to buying used. I also have a third row ac vent that doesn't blow any air out. Unless i push up on the headliner. Have you taken your car to the dealer for tranny?

I have not taken it there for the clunky shifts, though I have mentioned it, but I did take it in for an oil change and had them check out the grinding noise...As expected, I couldn't recreate the noise and therefore nothing could be done. I think this is because the engine needs to be colder for it to happen and it's about a 30 minute drive to the dealer. I've taken the laid back approach now and have decided to wait and see if it just falls apart one day, I'm kind of sick of being at the dealer all the time the last couple months.

Ah. I get it. I was being dense. I would not count on them issuing a refund but it would be worth asking. On the clunky shifting, there may be a software update for the transmission. Check out this site. 21-009-17d applies to both the JGC and the Durango.
