Hey everyone, I looked around and what I find is everyone swears by a 180 thermostat to keep the engine cooler which gives it more HP and will help it last longer. Alright, understood? My question is what are the effects on fuel consumption, if any? Does the stat have any effects on fuel consumption by itself or used in conjunction with other mods? I just want to make sure my D won't think I'm going too lean on fuel, especially since fuel/air changes have been made (Fastman TB, K&N FIPK) and more are planned?M1 manifold and possibly ported heads. Thanks in advance.

With your mods past and future, a 180 stat is indeed in order.

If you went with an available 165 stat? bad news and PCM fuel problems like you mentioned.

The only MPG issues you have with a 180 is that you may loose mileage due to a heavier right foot on the gas more due to a small HP gain. That's it.

Mod away! There are failsafe 180 stats available that fail in the open position if and when they fail. I don't have the brand or part number but if I had to do it over again, I'd make sure mine was one of those (it might be already and I don't know it. My 180 is from Jet, the same folks who make the Jet Chips).

My 180 stat = $10 from http://www.summitracing.com/
Stat gasket = 99¢ from AutoZone

Thanks a lot Indy! I wanted to hear it from someone who's got one, not some clown at a repair shop who doesn't drive a Durango. You know what I mean. I wanted to be careful based off of past experience when I had a 1999 Blazer I bought new. Chevy runs those to be at about 210 and I though to myself that's way hot?so of course I took it down to, I think 180 but it could have been less than that even. It caused all kinds of problems?Chevy dealer told me afterward they designed those engines to run hotter. Anyways thanks a lot, if anyone else has anything to put in about it, I'll definitely give it read. Thanks!

We put in a 180 stat when I got my M1 AND the 1.7 rockers AND pretty close to the day I put in the MPPCM, so I can't say for the stat alone? But at least it hasn't caused any problems. Still get the fan roar on hot days, in traffic, but heck, that's a D thang!

Well

I believe most of your power gains were from the work of THE Fastman!

Same here, sounds good though. I found a guy selling brand new valve covers (black crinkle paint) so I got those from him for $100 and I'm going to get his set of 1.7 rockers and pushrods probably as well. I'll keep it all tucked away till I get the M1 and then do it al at once so I'm not duplicating labor so much.

They're indeed due to the Amazing Dan the Fastman, uh, Man!
The "We" I referred to was Dan and HeavyD doing most of the hard stuff. I was the beer guy. :)
Ahh Yes I remember hearing that you were the beer guy at the Mod Party!
That was just before the plant tour.

That's funny, my 94 Corvette always ran @ 220-230deg. When I inquired with a local Corvette place, I was told that that was by design. The engine came with Mobile 1 from the factory and requires synthetic oil because of it.

Also, I tried a 165deg stat in an S10 I used to have and my mileage went to crap along with various other related problems.

They designed all of our rigs to run that hot for smog reasons.

No :!:

Get a FACTORY stock replacement stat on your 4.7l and you'll have the very best available. A new sat is something to get every once in a while anyways. Just avoid aftermarket ones for your motor. Seems that for whatever reason, they're missing a dimple here and a little hole there that actually make them WORSE that factory.

Also note, the 4.7l has a special way you'll need to 'burb' it to get the air out correctly. Otherwise, overheating issues creep up due to trapped air.

Besides (my ribbin' time now, hang on boys :) ) it's not like the 4.7l needs to worry about any real added performance anyways. What do you want to be like? Say a? 5.9L?

LOL

Not Nice Indy!
As he stated just keep the stock type stat
some will tell you its fine but you get too many temp fluctauations and tehwater jackets on a 4.7 block flow a certain way during warm and tehn it changes when stat opens
