2000 Durango 4WD 5.9 90K miles

Multiple problems occurring:
-will only start in neutral
-revs up to 3500 before shifting out of first
-surges at idle sporadically

all this started three days after changing cap/rotor/plugs/wires due to a slight miss. the miss went away but these showed up soon after.

any help would be appreciated.

Is the check engine light on? Sounds like a possible throttle position sensor going bad. But the only starting in neutral confuses things. Does it shift hard, like it's stuck inbetween gears? Maybe a shifter cable out of adjustment?

Aloha jwicz,

I have a couple of questions and maybe a little help. Did this just start happening? Have you had this D for a while? When did these problems start happening?

- Will only start in N
This sounds like and adjustment in the shifter/cable. There's a switch in the transmission that senses whether the vehicle is in P or N. If the shifter/cable isn't adjusted right, it may not be sensing the P position.

-revs up to 3500 before shifting out of first
This could be an adjustment of the TV cable. Do a search in the forum of "TV cable". If this was working for you fine for a while and just started - perhaps fluid level? Slip of the bracket that holds the TV cable in place.

-surges at idle sporadically
This might be a few things including TP sensor as outlined above. This could also be a dirty IAC (Idle Air Control.) The D controls idle by driving a plunger in and out of a small hole in the throttle body. If this unit gets sticky (from carbon etc.), then it could have problems driving this in and out. Also, does this happen before, after (both?) warm up? This might help diagnose the problem. The D's computer runs open loop when it's cold. After warm up, the D uses the O2 sensor to adjust the fueld mixture.

Hope this helps you diagnose your problem a bit. Wtih a little more information might be able to diagnose what's going on here. Good luck.

What started happening before the ignition change. What made you change the wires, etc. Did you see signs of problems before hand?

Neutral safety switch (or in some cases, it's a gear selector switch) comes to mind for the first problem. This may also cure the second problem. If the PCM doesn't think the tranny is in drive, it may not give the commands to shift gears properly.
This should set a MIL, but may not.

Also, if the shift cable is misadjusted, the manual valve might not be in quite the right position when you're in Drive and that may cause all sorts of shifting strangeness?

It sounds like the TB was removed and possibly cleaned during tune up and when put back in not adjusted as Tom stated
