So I'm looking at getting a Durango for a camping rig. I found one locally for cheap but it revs to about 4k before shifting into 2nd. Manually shifting from 1st to 2nd doesn't make a difference. Not sure if the trans is no good or if it's just a sensor. It's a 99 with the 5.9, 4wd, with 130k miles. Should I pass on it? Thanks

Well he's asking 1600 obo and said he's willing to go down due to the tranny issue. There's just not many that are less than an hour drive away from me. Im willing to work on it i just don't want to buy something then have to pay another 1000-1500 for a trans rebuild

I'd do it then. Work him down on the trans problem. Then you're looking at $150 topps in parts and fluid. Just make sure the fluid is atf +4. Any other type won't have the right friction modifiers and can damage the clutches prematurely.

This is the kit you should need.

If I recall correctly, the 46re trans should have a cable (T-V cable or some such) that runs from the throttle body to the tranny. There is a procedure to adjust it. If it is out of whack, the shifts can be wonky. This trans also should have its bands adjusted every 30k. It may not have ever been done.

I have a 98 that would always hard shift 2-3. I did a Trans fluid & filter change with a quart of Lucas trans stop leak/fixer. Worked the balls. I did not have a leak but with a 98 had to try something. I always heard that the TV cable & bands are a downshift issue. I do the work myself & not at a shop that charges for rebuilds so if you can do it yourself may be worth the buy. Remember the Dodge Magnum engine will not die but only what they bolt on them. Good luck & keep on trucking.

Personally I would go for it. Worst case is the trans is actually gone and you resell for near what is invested.

Did you check the tranny fluid? If it were dirty/dark I'd feel better about buying it than a car with bright pink fluid exhibiting the same issues. This is very similar to what mine was doing....had 150k on it and I don't think I had ever changed the tranny fluid. Dropped the pan and did filter/fluid and now it runs relatively smoothly.

The fluid was clean, he said he just had a fluid and filter change done on it, but it was a little low. I figured I could offer him like $1200 and if I have to have the trans rebuilt for like $1000 and have a good running rig I wouldn't have to worry about for awhile
