Hey guys, new to the board. Browsing a bit I can't find a definitive solution and I've done quite a bit without replacing big parts.

Changed the transmission oil in my 2004 Dodge Durango 4.7. Immediately after doing this, the vehicle would automatically switch into 4 lock even when the switch wasn't turned to it. It happens at all speeds and prevents me from going on the freeway, now (70 mph freeway).

I've disconnected the battery. I've checked the tranny motor and its connections. I've checked for leaks. And I've tried flipping the switch on and off a few times to hopefully reset it. Nothing fixed it.

The only thing I haven't done yet is check the switch to see if it is broken and making contact when going over bumps or something, but I haven't seen a pattern to when it activates and when it doesn't. Sometimes it happens, and sometimes I can drive it and it is fine.

Other than that, I am told to replace the TCCM. But I don't see how that could go bad from an oil change.

Can anyone explain what is going on and how to fix it? It still switches over when I use the switch.

If you need photos or additional info, please let me know.

strange.

Any codes?

There was an issue with water corroding some connections on Gen-IIs, maybe one of the Gen-II mavens will check in and point out what to look for..

That is VERY weird! You should be able to prevent the issue by getting it back to AWD, and the disconnect the harness connector from the shift motor. The Gen 1's used a TCCM, but I believe the shift commands come from a different source for the Gen 2 D's. Simply doing a drain and refill on the trans should not have any effect on the transfer case.
Did you replace both filters inside the pan?

Yes, I replaced both filters inside. Didn't have any problems, other than that small round rubber gasket was kind of a pita to push in but it got there.

Can you tell me exactly where the harness is to disconnect the shift motor? I'm getting a ton of different information doing online searches and my Durango doesn't seem to have anything in the same spot as the images and even the manual. I'd like to disconnect it for now till I can figure it all out.

On a side note, I've noticed if I listen to music, it shuts off all my music temporarily. Very weird indeed.

It's been a while since I've been under mine, but I believe there is only one connector on the T case. When you remove the connector, be sure to secure it up and away from the driveshafts so it won't get damaged. Your Service 4wd light will come one, but that is due to the connector being apart.

tranny/power steering fluid has been issues in the older d's, the abs lights/ brakes would trigger when oil gets wicked into the harness near the power steering box. I wonder if fluid in the wrong places might be at issue?

So are you referring to check the fluid inlet and see if there are leaks I missed? Or does it get pumped upward some where else to look? Got under the car yesterday to disconnect the motor and I didn't see anything at a glance.

If spillage or slash got oil into a harness, say the harness at the 4wd switch circuit, it can create the illusion to the system that the switch was active, due to fluid being in the harness, connector. Examine connector at tranny to see if it looks oily.
