If coolant temp error is factual then you could be running too rich to pass the sniffer test as the engine runs richer to get warmed up. Check engine temp and replace thermostat as needed, a 185 will work and pass just fine. Stock is 195 I believe.
Are you referring to temp or the part size? Also, is the thermostat on the top end of the Moro or at the bottom?

bottom.

Search around, I seem to recall there are things to be careful about when changing the 4.7L's thermostat..

couple threads I've found, I'm sure there are more:

If you have the upper hose with the radiator cap assembly, might want to replace that while you have the system drained.. they are prone to fail and pee coolant everywhere. Maybe a good to replace the lower hose as well if it is original.. easier to do it while you are in there..

Thanks. Hopefully it passes for now since money is tight. Plus my work schedule isn't that flexible to allow me a lot of spare time. Plus NC doesn't use a sniffer test, they literally hook up the OBD tool and if it passes it's all good. Either way I'll be replacing it. Thanks for the links.

I had my cal smog done with the reset, 35-40 miles or ~30 minutes. I worked with a smog guy near my house and he plugged my D in 4 times trying to figure out the 'PASS" status, 34 miles didn't do it on my 99

35psi is good.. IIRC that's what I ran on my Gen-Is..
Got another question for you real quick. I'm 99.9% sure this truck needs new spark plugs, how easy are they to change? Also, I suspect there might be moister getting in the oil as there's a bit of yellow on the oil cap. What do I need to check for this?

Plug change is not hard. Some of the plugs are a little challenging, but with the right set of extensions you can do it with no trouble.

blow the crap out of the plug tubes right after you yank each coil pack - don't want crap falling into the cylinder.

smear a little silicone dielectric grease on the inside of the rubber insulator before you reinstall the coil packs.. iirc there is also an o-ring on the coil pack, and a little silicone grease there is OK too.. (be careful, that damned grease gets everywhere if you don't pay attention and clean up often)

Snot on the oil cap is normal on a 4.7L, ignore it.

Awesome! Thanks so much for your help and everyone else's.

Also put some anti-seize compound on the plug threads so that they don't grow to the heads.
