I'm looking for a trailer to haul my D down to Atlanta in Sept. I can't seem to find on to rent around here that'll hold up the weight of the D. U-haul says they have a 4900 lb trailer but their PC states my D weighs over 5000 lbs, so they won't rent it to me. The only option I found is to buy a 16ft open deck brand new for $2595 which includes brakes on both axles and powder coated frame. Obviously, I don't wanna buy one. I need to rent one. Anyone have any suggestions? Also we're going to be using a 5.2 liter D to haul it. Should that be ok? It's not a FT 4x4. It's a 99 SLT.

Trailer Rental?

Have you tried contacting any of the trailer dealers in your area? We have one in town here that sells all types of trailers and he's always willing to rent them out for use as well? and they're cheaper than U-Haul.

Maybe there's a contractor in your area that would be willing to rent you one of their vehicle hauling trailers? (i.e. trailers used to haul around skid-steer loaders)

The weight of the D and the trailer (one that can actually handle the weight of the D) together will most likely be well over the max that a D can handle anyway.

Drive the D!

The reason I'm not driving is because with the insurance I currently have I can only drive 6000 miles per year. Atlanta is over 800 miles one way and I'm almost at my limit. How do I dis-connect odometer?

And how does the insurance company know your mileage? They audit? My policy is based on tables that say I live 7 miles from work, try 20 actually and 29k a year.

Just drive it.

I'm not sure if John is going to NOPI with you but he has a trailer maybe you could rent?? Make sure the D you'll be using to tow it is up to the task as far as towing pkg, trailer wiring for a trailer with brakes, and brake controller.
Sorry I can't personally help out anymore and I wish I was going with you.

I've never even heard of insurance only allowing you to drive a certain number of miles a year?that's ridiculous. It's not a lease. I'd get a new insurance company.

Oh and why not just lie to U-Haul about what vehicle is going on their trailer. I'm sure the trailer is actually rated for far more than they tell you. Or try Penske, they rent car trailers too! Or maybe even a 2wheel car dolly if it really comes down to it.

I'd just get new insurance and drive it.

How do I tell the difference on gearing?
It's listed on a sticker on the driver's side of the rear axle.

It's because I have specialty "show car" insurance on my D. If it were to be totaled, I'd get every penny out of it I put into it but at retail cost. I don't/didn't pay retail for anything in there. It cost me under $400 for a year and, if the D has a total loss, I'll get a check for a little under $50,000. Well worth the 6000 mile a year limit. If I had a regular policy, it'd be OK

If that's your dedicated show truck, then it sounds like you should go all the way and invest in a enclosed cargo trailer to transport it? and a new truck to pull it around!

Go with the triple axle for a payload capacity of 7,740 pounds!

But then you have the problem of where to store such a large trailer.

Not to mention the price of buying a truck and a trailer. I'm taking donations. Paypal me whatever you can afford and write it off as a charitable donation. LMAO. If I could afford to buy those things, it'd be a no brainer. I just can't justify or afford to try to justify buying those items.

Just pulling your leg? those would cost big bucks! They'd be nice to have if you win the lottery though

How about a tow dollie? With the hydraulic brakes you can tow 6000 pounds with this one.

I don't think I'd try to tow your show D with the other D if it only has the 5.2. Even if it has 3.92s, all the travel trailer places I've been to in the last couple of months have all told me that with the 5.9 and 3.55s, I can only tow a 5500 lb trailer. If you can get a tow dolly, that would be easier on your towing D. Good Luck on your travels :cheesy:
