I've had the notorious rough idle for about a year now. Finally my transmission started messing up, and it wouldn't shift out of 1st gear. I called Fastman, and he suggested that I change out the governer pressure sensor and solenoid. I changed them out, and it fixed the shifting problem and the rough idle problem. I think what was happening is the bad sensor/solenoid was trying to lock up the torque converter causing the engine to bog up. I'd be at an idle at a light and it'd almost die on me. Usually shifting out of gear into neutral or park would cause it to quit the bogging, but it was annoying.

Anyway, if you have the rough idle problem, and have tried everything else, you might go buy these parts and give it a whirl. It fixed mine.

On a side note, my reverse lights quit working, so I replace the park/neutral switch on the side of the transmission and it fixed that problem too.

Rough idle

It's good to see you back on the forum again. It has been a long time. I used to show up as gophor on the old forum.

My D is a '99 SLT+ 4x4. It's moderately modified.

Hey Mike! Long time no hear! I've had other focus in my life besides the Durango. More fishing and hunting and shooting lately. Plus we had a baby boy in March, so it's been a fun year so far.

Here's a pic of Rowan Jeffrey!

The sensor and solenoid should run you around $200. My engine choking came back briefly today during inspection. I bet it's tied to my timing. The timing chain has never been replaced, and I have 170K miles on it. Probably time for that job, too, but the roughness is better since the sensor changeout.
