ok, so I think I'm going to switch over to using a sythetic, the question is for you people running synthetic currently. what brand do you reccomend and what weight?. I was going to purchase mobil 1 platinum, but I wanted to get some other opinions first.

thx

Based on where you live, I'd go with 5w-30. Brand is up to you, most synthetics are better than regular dyno oil - my personal preference is Mobil 1 though. I've used Amsoil once in the minivan, it lasted a long time, but it's harder to get.

Mobil 1

Mobil 1 for me! Every car I own gets Mobil 1 from 1st change onward

I use Amsoil because I can get it from a guy at work which just makes it convenient. Back in the day, my Challenger got Mobil 1 synthetic. If Mobil 1 is easy to get, then I say go for it.

Ditto?Royal Purple for me.

Mobil 1 is good also.

I've some bad stories about Castrol syntehic. Something you may want to stay away from.

I use Mobil1 and in a previous thread, I mentioned how dark and used it looks when doing an oil change. Someone else mentioned Shaefers and that it comes out as clean as it went in. Now it may depend on the engine and history, but my D had Penzoil for 3 years and Mobil1 for the last 3.

generally, the oil is supposed to look dark and used when it comes out?

if it doesn't, then all the stuff that makes it look dark and used is staying on surfaces inside your engine instead of coming out when you drain it?

Mine only looks marginally dirty after 4k oil changes but definitely darker after 6k oil changes with Mobil 1.
I did use a K&N filter a few times and it come out much cleaner after 5k than with any other filter.
I recently had my valve covers off for something and I must say that my engine was spotless inside. My friend whom helped me couldn't believe there were no dark or dirty spots at all.
I have 100% faith in Mobil 1 with all the talk about 4.7's that sludge up if you only use them on short trips blah blah blah. Most of my drives are around the block to get the kids or 15 -20 jolts to the store. Not a spec of crud, sludge or any other BS in there!

Unless there's nothing in the engine that's causing it to turn dark. A fresh engine with regular oil changes using high quality oil won't generally darken too much. It's only contaminated oil that darkens.
In theory, if there were no contaminants introduced to the oil, it could last indefinitely. Look at a propane fueled vehicle? The oil is as clean as the day it's dumped in 10,000 miles later. There's little to no contamination with propane fuel as it burns so cleanly.

Our race motor got broke in on Schaeffer's 20w50, and it gets changed every 4th-5th race (gross overkill), and now 2 1/2 years later, when the valve covers were pulled to adjust rocker arms, the heads and valve covers were as clean as the day that engine was assembled. This engine runs 110 octane leaded race fuel, and has seen coolant temps upwards of 265? regularly.
