I find myself having to add maybe 4 to 5 quarts of oil to my D between 3000 mile oil changes. Obviously I'm losing oil somewhere, but I don't see any oil dripping underneath the vehicle. What are some possible issues I should look into? :?

Check your PCV valve.
Which motor?
If it's a 5.2 or 5.9, look down the throttle body with a flashlight. If you see oil, there's a good chance your belly pan gasket on the intake is leaking.

It's located at the end of a hose in one of the valve covers.
Look down your intake with the air cleaner removed and open the throttle plates manually. I bet you'll see oil.

The PCV is located in the driver's side valve cover but, if you're losing that much oil, it's being drawn into the intake from a leaking intake plenum gasket. Get it to a shop right away! Have them replace the spark plugs too.

Not sure of his model year?? It's driver's side on 2000s+, like you and I Bill, passenger side for 1999-1998.

Make sure you're pulling on the right one! The opposite side is just a connected tube that DOESN'T come out? unless you break it. Then the cover needs to come off to fix it. :wall:

Correct! camron185 has a 1999 but, depending on exactly WHEN in 99 it was produced, it could be either side. Check the passenger side first.

Uhhh yea, that's what we were saying in the posts above.

Yes I have a Hughes on my R/T and it's a perfect fix. DO NOT simply repair it back to stock because it can happen again. Fix it via the Hughes solution and you're done with that problem forever.

Totally agree with Indy on this. The Hughes may cost a bit more now, but a stock repair will lead to another stock failure, and another, and another, etc. I had the plenum leak on my 98 5.2 and used the Hughes kit to repair it and had no further trouble with the plenum for the remaining 4 years and 60k miles I put on it. When you see the difference in the two parts, you'll be glad you went with the Hughes; plus you get a cool sticker. That's worth +5 horsepower you know.

I'm going to place an order for the gasket this week. The knowledge you guys collectively have is priceless and it's great being able to go to the mechanic and know what I'm talking about. Thanks for the help!

Is the plenum gasket problem a known issue on the 4.7L engine too? I use about 1qt of oil per 1000 miles, but see no external leakage anywhere.

No. It has a different design. You don't mention how many miles are on the engine. That is something to consider.

What weight oil are you using? Slightly heavier oil often stays in the engine longer. The lightweight stuff is really only for mileage in the ever ongoing epa mileage rating game.

I'm using Castrol 20/50 high mileage, which was recommended here on the board by you or some of the others. Thanks for your help!!

Replacing crankcase vent valve can help this also. I would also get a leak down test run to see if anything else shows up.

I still use 10W30 in my 4.7L and I'm at 352,000 miles. Oil usage is about the same as you.
Thanks for the info. I just can't imagine where all the oil goes? Not visibly leaking that I can tell. I just changed my plugs, and they are worn, but that's all. I didn't see any oil staining there. I've changed my PCV valve a couple times. My TB looks dirty so I'll clean that.
