Hi,

I'm new to the forum and have a few questions that I think you all can help me with before I take my vehicle to the dealership. I have a 2014 Limited RWD. I absolutely love it until it comes time to go to the dealership. I'm in the Houston area and so far they all suck :wall:.

First, I'm having problems with my driver side HID headlight continuing to go out but the bulb isn't bad. I have to turn the headlights off, restart the truck, and then turn them back on after several tries it miraculously comes back on (thanks guy from the local Goodyear). Does anyone else have this problem? I've been told these lights cost $350 each to replace . I don't plan to replace unless it's free ;).

Second, all my door windows appear blurry/wave pattern (they were tinted by the dealership). I've went to different tinting companies for opinions and they all seems to think it's the glass and not the tint. Is this normal or has anyone experienced this? I currently have 27k miles on truck and the lifetime warranty.

Thanks in advance

Swap the bulbs, see if the problem follows. If it does, you do have a bad bulb. If not, you have a bad ballast or ignitor. If that's the case, then yeah...$350 or so doesn't seem far off (the ballasts on my Mazda were $250 each). Is the bulb color any different from the other side?

That wavy pattern you're seeing might be because of the tint. If it's polarized, that could cause that. Also, some poorly manufactured safety glass can do that.

Also, if it IS a bulb issue...$350 is a crock of shit. Jump on Amazon or ebay and get yourself a good name brand (Osram, Sylvania) bulb for around $50-$70 each. Replace both headlights too because if one bulb is gone, then your other is soon to follow.

Thanks for the reply. The first time I took it in for the headlight, they said the bulb was good. I'm guessing the ballast or ignitor isn't covered under warranty? The bulbs are the exact same blue color. As for the tint or glass, I will have the dealership look at it again since it should be covered by them :D.

The 2014's use a d3s bulb which has the igniter built into the base of the bulb, it's that big square thing on it.

Also, you have to watch out for counterfeit bulbs. Bad bulbs *could* burn the reflector bowls in your headlights. There are tons of them on eBay and Amazon. The retrofit source is a good place to get genuine bulbs.

Thanks Skippy426. I will start there.

+1 to The Retrofit Source. Morimoto is good shit.

I didn't know that about the igniter being built into the bulbs. I've got D2S bulbs in my Mazda...was basing it off of that. I REALLY need to take a weekend and really look into things under the hood on our Durango....we've got HIDs as well.

I would think that the ballast would be covered as well.

My passenger headlight (HID) went out the other night. I'm hoping it's just the bulb. I ordered a set of D3S 5500k replacement bulbs from retrofit source yesterday. Any tips on changing these bulbs?

I know in the 2011 there is a small access hatch in the wheel well that you pull out. Then there's a rubber dust cap that covers the actual bulb, that just pulls off. Then you unlock the bulb using the small lever on one of the sides of the bulb, and out comes the light.

Make sure you get them seated properly or your light output will be awful. You can check by looking at the cut off.

I just purchased a 2014 Durango Limited last week. But before that I had a Saab 97-x that had HID headlights that would do the same as your lights are doing. It was the ballast on mine that were going bad. I would expect it would be the same for yours. Mine would get worse when it was cold out and not hardly turn off when it was hot out. I would suggest checking ebay for a ballast replacement and see if that fixes the problem.

Thanks Jake. I think the ballast may be covered under warranty so I'm going to take it in. If not, hopefully I can buy it online and find someone to fix it.
