Hey All,

Just thought I'd share my unexpected discovery from tonight.
Knowing that the 2011-2015 V6 Pentastar engine has been the same across all platforms and utilize the same cold air intakes, I made the awesome assumption that the 2016 V6 was the same engine. Lots of red flags along the way, but I found an open box K&N 77-1560KTK for a good price and jumped on it.

First thing I noticed was that the engine cover itself looked a bit different from the pictures and had an unmentioned screw holding it down. But I brushed it off thinking it was an aesthetic change for this year. It's all the same Pentastar V6, I'm sure.Took off the engine cover and identified all components that the instructions laid out, ok I'm feeling better

Red flag number 2 - the front box on the intake tube itself is really long, not short and compact like in the picture. That's got to be some sound deadening feature for 2016 due to EPA regulations, I figured. It's all the same Pentastar V6, I'm sure. I continue the removal of the stock intake and airbox without any issues and, again, I'm feeling better.

I get everything for the heat shield and separate tubes all assembled without issue.

Red Flag number 3 - I realize that the throttle body is absolutely not in the right place. I study the images in the instructions harder and my heart drops: the throttle body is in the front of the engine, not the rear corner. I put on the shorter intake tube and sure enough, not even close to being able to assemble the entire intake.

I go to youtube and watch the install video to cement my fears: the 2016 Durango V6 is not the same engine as previous years. The throttle body and intake manifold are in a completely different configuration. I then do some research and find articles regarding a revised 2016 pentastar v6 and realize what I had done. It now makes sense that I had earlier noticed...

Red Flag number 4 - While looking for the intake Amazon and K&N's website, they did not list the 2016 V6 as being compatible. K&N also had a 2016 durango v6 on its list of "vehicles needed for R&D". But Amazon must be outdated and K&N must just be double checking to be safe, right? It's all the same Pentastar V6, I'm sure... until I learn that it isn't.

Hope you all enjoyed the story of my heart-breaking night. Here's some pictures of how it'll sit for the night until I re-assemble the stock intake tomorrow and figure out what I'm going to do with my new K&N Paper Weight!

Nope... Definitely not fitting:

The new engine cover - the first dead giveaway

Yeah the 16 with start/stop clearly brought lots of other changes. Wow, sorry to hear it didn't work out too well. Hope they make an intake for that soon. Doesn't look like the intake for the RT would even be close either.

The Hemis take the same intake for all Gen 3's

Wow, didn't expect that! Must be for the stop start they got?

Same here! I'm hoping my post will help prevent anyone from making the same mistake/assumption that the engines are the same.

Damn that sucks. Good story though.

Soooooo, about this heavily used cold air intake..... For sale?

Ha, well if Amazon won't accept the return (which I'm hoping they will as it was sold "used" originally) you'll be first on the list to contact for selling it!

I just find it odd that the only documentation I can really find on these revised/reworked Pentastars were a few articles back in Sep 2015 and all mentioning it originally going in the Grand Cherokee. I would have figured that Dodge would have marketing all over about the revised V6 with increased torque and HP for this year.

Ran into this this thread doing "research". I have a 2017 Citadel on order and thought this revised V6 issue was new for 2017, not 2016. Makes sense since ESS only started in 2016 though. It also gives me hope that someone will make a CAI for it since it's no longer for just a single model year as I thought but it's actually for 2016's & 2017's. I'm assuming this configuration will also be the same for other FCA vehicles that have ESS? That would make it more likely then that aFe, K&N, Mopar and others will go through the R&D to make one? I was hoping to have my CAI already on order to install right after taking delivery.
