I gutted my new Durango and installed 2-3 layers of soundproofing. I also upgraded the sound system (I will post a separate thread about this). I used STP products, which are both better (according to DIYMA) and cheaper than Dynamat, which I used on 2 previous vehicles. I am very pleased with the result. I measured SPL before and after, which indicated a 15dB reduction in noise. I treated the floor, doors, liftgate, and hood.

I used 1 layer of STP Gold vibration dampener and one layer of STP SPL04 sound deadening closed-cell foam under the carpet.

The doors and liftgate were treated with 1 layer of STP Gold and 1 layer of BTP10 (thicker foam than under carpet).

I decided against using any MLV due to the existing OEM soundproofing layers and 3M Thinsulate inside the door panels.

Nice work! 15db is nothing to sneeze at. Our D's are fairly quiet stock. I bet you can hear a pin drop now...assuming your new system isn't turned on. :)

OK, help me understand soundproofing a bit better.
I get putting the Dynamat material down and I've done so with other vehicles in the doors and it really helps the sound output, but then you need to cover it with a closed cell foam?
What is a MLV product? Is that more of another sound barrier and is that preferred to put down on floors?

All well and good regarding the article. However, depending on your source of info the threshold for hearing damage is from @ 105 db up for any extended periods of time. Much lower than their level for pain. They don't seem to address the spray on sound deadeners that are out there and work well either.
Anything we can do to make our rides less like the inside of a drum is a vast improvement and highly recommended. Great job on improving your rig.

Loud: is there a comparison between the spray on Lizard skin and Dynamat available? All of these references seem to avoid even mentioning the spay on approach. But they are informative and good reads.

Spray on would require a lot more prep I think and a lot more mess
I used dynomat in some areas on my Gen 1 , there is no way I am going this extreme on this Gen 3
Maybe a speaker upgrade and a different hidden subwoofer

Great pics, I don't see myself going that far since the truck is pretty quiet other than the exhaust to start but I do want to do the front doors, how difficult are the panels to remove and how sturdy do the feel? I'm always reluctant to start pulling panels off since the plastic tabs break pretty easily.
