I'm a new owner of a 2015 Durango Limited. I wasn't looking for the power liftgate. Until now it was a luxury I was happy to live without. But it was on all the cars I looked at so now I have one. I understand the convenience under certain circumstances but most of the time I'd be happy to swing the thing up and down on my own. So, two questions:

1) When the gate is open you can grab it and shut it yourself but there's resistance from the power mechanism. Is shutting it yourself in any way damaging to the mechanism?

2) Is there a way to stop it from opening completely? I open it to let the dog jump in. Then we both stare at each other while the gate continues to open to full height. Then we both stare at each other while the gate closes. I've tried stopping it with my hand to slam it closed quickly (as in my first question) but it beeps like crazy and resists.

I hate to the the old-fashioned guy but sometimes getting the gate open and shut quickly is more of a conveniencethan doing it automatically.

1 - When you push it to close it, the power mechanism should start automatically to close it. I wouldn't push against it to make it close faster.
2 - When the liftgate is opening, hit the button just inside the opening, and it will reverse direction and close. Just stay out of the way!

Maybe get a quick hi five , down and rollover as it closes . I have pushed mine down many times because my goofball dogs like to run and one has short legs (corgi) and I'm afraid it will break something jumping out . The vet bill will far exceed whatever could break in the mechanism. Maybe some one else knows how that thing works.

Check out the goofball Corgi

Another thing to watch for is something in the way of the door closing. My gas can, similar to the one below had the little spout piece get pinched at the top. The door was 90% shut and I jumped in the front seat was pulling out of the station getting ready to stomp on the V8 and jump into traffic. When I heard a horn beep it was very loud like the windows were open. It wasn't the windows the tailgate was wide open the can would have went flying out.

Maybe you don't realize this, or haven't tried it yet. While the back door is going up, push the button again and it will close back up. You don't have to wait for it to go all the way up

If you push the button under the rear door handle twice it goes into manual mode. I know this works for opening and then you can always manually close it without any assist.

And actually, the other thing you can do, besides pushing the button again to make it go down while it's going up, just use your hand to stop it and push down a little as it is rising, and it will reverse and close again - I imagine that's a feature in case you open it and there is an obstruction.
