Hi, first post. Been reading up on the forum for a while now. I have a 2015 4Runner that I'm looking to trade for a R/T. Expanding the family to 3 little ones now and the 4Runner won't be as practical as I'd like. Please note, I love the 4Runner and it is rock solid but times change. Sometimes quicker than we'd like.

So I submitted an order for a 2016 Durango R/T with the only options being Sunroof and split rear captains chairs.

Currently we have a 10 and 7 year old. I really wanted to keep the 4Runner but it will become tedious trying to fit all 3 in the back seat. We went and bought a baby holder thing to see what room would be on each side when placed in the middle.

Did it fit, yes. However, my wife is 5' tall and had a very hard time getting the carrier into the middle. And that was without a baby inside of it.

So we came to the conclusion that a 3rd row is needed.

So luckily a local new vehicle car show was last month. We went to every single SUV with a 3rd row that was reasonably priced (under 45k).

I also looked at the 3rd row for the 4Runner, figuring an option would be to trade our current SR5 for one with the 3rd row. My god is that a bad design. There is really no easy way to get to the 3rd row in a T4R and with the 3rd row up, no space behind it.

A 2016 Explorer was next up. It was promising but I really don't like the look but the Ecoboost 3.5 would be nice. It was also over our budget unless i want to go with the lower model (no fun there). Plus its basically a FWD car. No fun there either.

So we looked at a Durango R/T. It seemed to check all the boxes.

3rd row. Easily accessible either via pass through captains chairs or the chairs flip forward really easy for easy ingress/egress which is nice. Plus with the 3rd row up, plenty of room behind for stuff.

We figured placing the carrier in one of the captains chairs, one kid in the other and the last kid in the back.

I get V8, AWD (not as good as true 4WD but I rarely use it except for winter), good looks and a 3rd row.

What I'm worried about is Dodge quality. So far most complaints have been about the infotainment system being buggy and water pump failures. Also, with the 5.7, is the catch can for the PCV system a good idea? The PCV system on the Hemi seems to pull quite a bit of blow pack into the intake which I could see over the long term causing problems.

My 4Runner has been rock solid and I can't complain about the quality. its great. I hate the Entune infotainment system and HVAC controls but beyond that it's an awesome vehicle.

Any feedback would be appreciated on what to expect. I have a Affiliate Rewards Program number for 1% under invoice but was also curious if I can deal down even lower than that.

I have the V-6, so I can't comment on the Hemi, but I can tell you I am completely satisfied with my Durango. Solid, great ride, no problems at all - in 53K miles, other than hitting a deer, the only time it has seen the shop was for scheduled maintenance. Easily the best vehicle I've ever owned.

We had a 2011 4Runner SR5 package and traded for a 14 R/T. No regrets whatsoever and much happier. I live in the south so not much need for AWD for us. It's my wife's daily driver as was the 4Runner and she feels it's one of the best vehicles we have had. No problems at all minus the few nit picky things like hood alignment and a spot or two in the paint. I did put a catch can on when I put on the intake but never really considered it before that. The 3rd row is awesome for a vehicle this size and we are a family of 4 with other frequent riders with no complaints and we too have the captains chairs. That was my only request the chairs and a sunroof. The HEMI is great and I'm well pleased. Fuel consumption is great and very good for a V8 on roadtrips. I've said it on here before that the 4Runner was a slacker when it comes to getting down the road. I was never really pleased with the performance of that V6. We may have had an off day motor but it never seemed to have enough grunt to push around that 4Runner. The HEMI sound is instantly addictive. I was not a Mopar guy previous to the Durango but I'm now sold on it.

Our '15 has been great - only issue was rear nivomat shocks which were replaced.

I'm pretty sure the V8 has true 4wd low range - if not, others here will set me straight.

When my daughter was a new born we had her placed behind the passenger front seat , my 4 yr old was in the third row drivers side and my wife sat behind the driver to be able to tend to both the kids needs.

Only thing that comes close to the rango is a minivan For seating options and pricing

Don't worry about the snow we had a storm here recently 24 ins of snow and the rango didn't miss a beat and I never had to lock the diff

I have a 15 R/T with second row captains chairs. We traded in our '13 Ram Sport crew cab when we found out we were having our 4th kid!
We love the Durango. The rear facing baby seat is behind the passenger side. One car seat in 3rd row on the drivers side and two 2 booster seats in the other two spots.
Kids get in and out real easy. Everyone loves going for drives.

Had it since May of this year. No problems or concerns at all. Never had any problems with our Ram either. The uConnect system is the best infotainment system in my opinion. We are 100% satisfied with our Duranto R/T as a family hauler. We shopped around before we bought it. The only other SUV that was interesting to my wife was the MDX, but the 3rd row was smaller and it had less features for more money. We made the right choice for us with the Durango. I think you will come to the same conclusion too.

We had one issue that couldn't be repaired however Dodge completely and in every way took care of us. We love our Durango and would recommend to anyone.

I was in the same boat. Moving from an '04 Honda Pilot with 155k trouble-free miles. I've owned nothing but imports for 30 years. That said, nothing else on the market comes close to the Durango R/T in the looks department, driving experience, or, dare I say, "exclusivity." Pilots, Highlanders and Explorers are a dime a dozen. The new Pilot looks like it requires mom jeans to drive it. The Explorer just feels weird to drive. The Highlander, well, it doesn't feel like anything to drive. It's a Toyota. :(

I'm rolling the dice and picking up my '16 Durango R/T this morning. :D

I have a '14 Durango Citadel AWD Hemi with 29k trouble free miles. From a reliability perspective, the only issue was a check engine light which the dealer fixed in 5 minutes - it never came on again.

I read about the oil catch can and decided against it. I did so because my daily driver is a 2005 Dodge Magnum Hemi, which I bought new. Overall it has been bulletproof and (knock on wood) has never had a single engine issue whatsoever. It doesn't use oil, and runs just like it did on day 1. I figured if the Magnum didn't need a catch can, why bother putting one on my Durango? I'm sure they won't hurt, but I don't think they are necessary, either.

Despite my good experience with the Magnum, I still opted to get a MaxCare lifetime warranty on my Durango. If you are still worried about reliability, then I would check them out. After negotiation, the prices on the extended warranties are surprisingly low.

BTW. Before my 2005 Magnum, my prior three cars were all Honda's.

I have two little ones and Durango is fine for that, but really I would not be buying it if we had a third child, mini van or larger SUV is the way to go. For us we do like to travel in the summer, camping and such and car is fully packed to the roof and beyond already with two kids.

On the catch can...I have 165K on a 2006 Hemi so that's 10yrs of ownership and not ONE single issue with the engine. NOTHING.
I do not run a catch can either.
Only have done oil changes and plugs.

Correction...just remembered I had a oil pressure switch fail recently.
So, 10yrs, 165K miles, 1 oil pressure sensor replaced.

I have a 2012 R/T and a Honda Odyssey. If you have 3 kids and have a lot of stuff the Durango is just too small. I do have three kids and I fit all of them in it fine but I were going somewhere that requires a lot of toys or baggage we take the Odyssey. That being said I was really worried about Dodge quality myself, I have always been against American cars but the Durango is really nice. Not luxury car quality but it is close if you get a higher level trim. My biggest complaints are the V8 guzzles gas (I do have a heavy foot though), the entertainment system is just OK (but I hear in the newer models it is much nicer) and the MDS exhaust vibration. The MDS thing really drives me crazy, but it goes away when you do manual shift and I'm ok with that. Overall I'm really satisfied with the Durango. Good luck!

I just got my wife a '16 Tahoe LTZ & with all 3 rows up, it's the same cargo space as the Durango. Actually, the Durango is 201" long and the Tahoe is 204" long. The Tahoe is a little wider & taller, but if you are packing a vehicle full of stuff with 3 rows up, you need a Suburban size SUV or a minivan.

All v8s get poor mpg when compared to v6 but if I recall the minivans are in the mid 20s mpg so they are nothing special as well.
Space wise mini van wins all day.

The MDS is also disabled if you turn ECO mode off. Driving home from the dealership with our 2016 R/T, we felt the MDS kick on and I played with the throttle to see the tolerances of when it turns on/off. So when it was on, I pressed the "ECO Off" button, and it turned MDS off.

So you don't need to engage manual paddle shift to turn it off if you don't want to, simple turn ECO mode off.

ECO and MDS are two separate systems and work independently. A programming change to the ECU is the only way to turn off the MDS in a Hemi. More than likely you were just noticing the RPMs changing by the transmission shifting differently and causing the MDS to kick out.

The manual shifting is keeping the RPMs higher so it does not drone.

Right, I undestand they are 2 separate systems, but the MDS drone went away, without an increase in RPM, when I pressed the ECO Off button. I don't know why this happens, it's just an observation. I assumed that turning ECO off was disabling MDS, since MDS is solely for MPG increase. Maybe the 2016 programming is different?

Here is a pic of the 2016 layout:
