I wanted to get some opinions on when I should change over to synthetic oil. I currently have 3k miles on my D and I just got the oil changed 4 days ago ( free one at the dealership ). Only problem is it was done with conventional oil. Should I make an appointment to get it switched over to synthetic or wait until the next time it's due for a change? Also, how many miles should you be able to go between changes on synthetic?

Thanks

After buying my Durango, I did an early oil change (at about 2,000 miles) with synthetic blend. I purposefully did not reset the oil monitor. Next time the EVIC calls for the oil change, I will switch to the full synthetic.

No sense wasting money on a needless oil change in my opinion. Swap at the next interval and don't worry.
agreed. modern cars will be able to switch between synthetic and conventional oil just fine. this isn't like the old days when switching to synthetic caused seals to leak.

i would use up all my free oil changes from the dealer before paying extra for synthetic.

There is actual a school of thought that a new engine (that does not require synthetic) should run conventional for several thousand miles for a "break in" period. Mainly for rings to wear in is the thought as modern synthetics are so good they can prolong that break in period for 10's of thousands of miles. Normally is discussed in terms of a fresh rebuild or a new crate motor, but no reason to not think it should not apply to a new car engine.

agree with above... wait til next interval to switch..

I bought my D with 14xxx miles and switched to full synthetic at 17500.. and I just did my second full synthetic at 25000 (doing them every 7,500 miles)

Thank you for the reply. I'll wait for another 3500 miles and switch to full synthetic.

BTW I live right above you, in Cedar Rapids!

fwiw, I think people are also trying to tell you that you don't need to change your oil that often. Take advantage of the oil life gauge and change it when it says. Newer cars can easily go 7,500 to 10,000 miles between oil changes. 3k is too soon. At least I think that's what everybody means when they're saying "interval"

It's granite with the blacktop wheels. It's the only granite ones I've seen in the area. If you ever see me make sure you say hi. 
Will do!

Same to you.. I'm the A**hole with the annoyingly bright HIDs... lol

In my wife's 2015 Durango, it's a lease. So, we will just change the oil when the EVIC tells us to and will use whatever the dealer puts in it.

In my 2013 Passat TDI, which I am buying, it uses a Castrol full synthetic blend. VW covers the maintenance for the first 30k miles, and they do oil changes at 10k, 20k, and 30k. So that is what I have been doing. Those who have sprung for Blackstone used oil analysis tests show that the oil is just fine at 10k. My plan is to do my oil changes about every 15k. That comes out to about once every 9 months or so with the number of miles I drive.

TDI requires 0w-40 diesel oil. I did not know Castrol semi syn is spec'd for diesel.
On the topic, most synthetic oil are petroleum anyway. A conventional labeled motor oil should be fine for 6k miles. I would not leave any oil in my sump for 10k miles.

Actually the new Clean Diesels with the DPF system, use a 5W-30 blend, which used to be called Castrol SLX LL03 and it's now been re-labeled as Castrol Edge Professional LL03. It is specifically a low-ash oil confirming to the VW 507.00 requirements on these new TDI engines. It's been engineered between VW and Castrol for the VW and Audi engines. It's a full synthetic and is designed for long drain intervals.
