I was having trouble with the 2001 D running rough and stalling and the check engine light had been on for several days. I had a code reader put on it and got the codes P0132 and P0551 which indicated a faulty upstream O2 sensor and a power steering pressure switch. This seemed to be a classic combination. I changed both (that O2 sensor was a pain in the rear btw), but the check engine light is still on.

I saw a thread from several years back from someone with a similar problem who wanted to know how to clear the light. I believe it was IndyDurango who answered that the code needed to be cleared or it would clear itself over the next 100 starts. Have I likely solved the problem or am I possibly missing something? Will the light resolve itself or should I be looking for other problems? There was a clear improvement in the running of the car and it seems as if the stalling issue is gone.

It MIGHT clear itself, though it may take a while. You should clear it by hook or by crook and see if it comes back.

O2 codes are a big deal in the OBD world, it might be that they can't go away without an explicit clear.

Which engine do you have? Cleaning the throttle body would be a good next step. Also, it would be best to clear the codes and see what returns. Basic code readers are cheap, less than $30.

Renn, sorry for not replying sooner. The engine is a 4.7. The mechanic I had look at it was eventually able to clear the codes. He said he rebooted the PCM seven times and eventually had to pull power from it before the codes would clear. Light not showing and everything OK so far.
