I just got done installing a replacement head for the right side of my 01 Dodge Durango 4.7. All seem to go well. Got the marks on my timing chain lined up with the cam gear. Spun engine around a few times to make sure everything was moving the way it should. After about 8-10 revs, I noticed that the marks were going to merge again, but when they did they were like a tooth off. Did I do something wrong? Will the marks ever meet again after so many revs? I want to be sure before I put timing cover back on. Here's something else, when I took old head off, I thought the marks I put on chain and gear were at the 12 o'clock position. When I put new head on , both marks are at about the 10-11 o'clock position.
So...if anyone has any information for me, please share. I'd like to get this thing put back together and running before it gets cold...got no heat in garage! Thanks.

skitzo.d,
Thanks for that. I thought that maybe if I'd turn it over they should eventually meet up again. But I really didn't want to hear that. After reading a bit on my topic, I remembered that when #1 was TDC, both L&R cam gears should have the V-8 marks at 12 o'clock position. With the head already torqued down, is there a simply way of getting both gears the way the should be with out a major operation (removing head again and replacing head gasket and bolts again...my wife would shit if I told her I need to spend more money on this project)! I thought of removing L side valve cover and looking at where that cam gear is in relation ship to the right side. IF #1 cylinder is TDC, then the Left side cam gear marks should be at the 12 o'Clock position,...right?
Thanks for any help,
dano

Well...I believe I have everything aligned , but still rather confused from the way it was when I dismantled it. I've been able to research a Chilton manual via our local library's website, and that's got me even more confused. In it they are talking about double plated links that I should be able to see through a couple slots in the idler gear, and since I can't stick my head down in there and see them, I'm just going to have to take their word for it. Then the manual telling me about some marks on the secondary chains that don't really line up with anything.
As I was aligning the marks that I put on the timing chain and gear, I saw two reddish dots on the secondary chain for the passenger side cam...didn't see anything in Chilton about them unless that was the marks as stated about above.
As it sits now...both left and right cam gears V8 marks set at 12 o'clock and #1 cylinder TDC, and the timing marks on the flywheel lined up with the mark on the timing cover...I should be good to go. Any one have any input on this before I close it up, I'd really appreciate it...wish me luck.
