You probably looked at the wrong side of the element. There are always metal particles in new engines. Oil pan is the best to looked at under bright white light after dumping the used oil.
The V6 has a cartridge filter so it makes it real easy to inspect the outside of it which is the correct side. I'm not saying there are no metal particles, just none visible in the filter using my 500 lumen led light.

I changed my oil today, I hate my oil catch tray. Plug came right off, but I have one of those oil catch trays that is semi flat on the top with a plug in the center. Well when I was placing it under my D the little plug in the middle fell back into the container. So when the oil started to go the catch pan couldn't keep up and I ended up with hot oil overflowing. Lucky for me I had a large Blitz pan underneath that or I would of had a real mess on my hands. Oil itself looks fairly clean, wasn't gritty or anything like that, but I had some metal shavings in the filter. I had my wife take a photo on her phone, I'll post it later. The one concerning part is there were two longer metal shavings that were around a quarter inch. Should I be concerned by the metal or not? I think next item for purchase is gonna have to be a magnet for the oil pan.

Hi all. Just did my first PM also. It is an easy oil change! I had no issues with the drain plug or filter. I used a 6 point socket and flex head long ratchet. I also have a lisle oil filter "cap" wrench that I use on my Cummins Ram that fits the 899 oil filter perfectly. I used valvoline syn power as it also has the MS spec, and the pennz platinum was sold out. I found I had to put quite a bit more than the 7 Q to get OK on the stick.
I had nearly 2900 mi and 63% on the oil life. The D is not following the reset procedure as given in the owners manual. I did not try the procedure shown in the OP yet since the D is out shopping . Can anyone explain why the procedure in the book is not working? I'm usually pretty good with these reset deals.

I made the '14 stay home today so I can nail this oil level deal. I've been doing this stuff for $ for 29 years. I have NEVER seen such a fussy engine to fill with engine oil! Sure enough, it's WAY over. There must be a baffle in the intake/ valley where the oil is filled. Now it's right at the top dot. I guess just dump the 7 in and don't even check it. Advice to keep filling till OK is bad.
Does anyone know if the new D displays engine hours?

I'm still tossing around when to do my first oil change, but this is good info for when I do... Thanks all!

Do it sooner than later. Don't heed the oil life.

I would not go more than 2000 miles on the first change
I did mine after 1200 miles or so

Oh don't worry I'm debating doing it at 500 or 1500 miles. If I do it later I'll switch to synthetic otherwise I'll do one more round of dino oil.

The procedure in the book is worthless, you can't hold the right arrow, it just moves to the next thing.

I did the accelerator thing, worked like a charm on the first try. :)
how do you do it with the accelerator?

Put your Durango in "RUN" without starting the engine. Push the accelerator completely to the floor 3 times with about 1 second between pushes.

I have changed my oil twice, and this method has worked to reset the oil life to 100%.

It's in the very first post in this tread.

I did it 3 times like the OP.

I believe the owners manual says depress the accelerator 3 times within 10 seconds.
