I guess last night my husband got on a different site and there was alot of talk about engine sludge in the oil pan on the 4.7 v8. Has anyone ever heard of this problem or had this problem. New too the site haven't seen a thing about it here.

It used to be quoted a lot from other sites, but no real proof. Change oil at proper intervals, using good quality oils and you should have no problems.

high humidity area, bad compression, can all lead to junk oil when extra time added between oil changes. stay to the recommended oil change intervals...= no sludge

The usual "4.7L engine sludge" is just a buildup of brown snot on the bottom of the oil filler cap. It is harmless, and is not an indication of anything at all inside the engine. Beyond that, I know of no particular sludge issues with the 4.7L

The cause of the brown snot problem: The PCV valve is in the oil filler tube, so there ends up being a very high concentration of crankcase vapors in there... and (especially in cooler weather) the surfaces at the top of the oil filler tube are cold enough to condense the crankcase vapors. There was a change to the oil filler tube (a baffle) and the cap (an airspace inside), but it still happens.

Our 03 4.7 had a lot of that sludge crap on the cap and down the oil filler tube. I just put a can of Chemtool carb cleaner in the engine right before I changed the oil a couple oil changes and cleaned it right up and never did it again. Im sure the engine was clean inside, after the first can ran through it the old drained oil was very black and nasty. Oil changes after that looked better.
