Mounting plate? I thought the stock one was just a clip-on, no?
There is actually a "plate" that allows the clips on the back side of the emblem to attach. It's just a small piece of plastic over the honeycomb...should make it pretty easy to attach a "stick on" type emblem.

EDIT: I looked again, the "plate" is actually an integral part of the honeycomb grille insert.

I was thinking of taking the emblem off. If I take it off, I'm guessing the grill will look funny based on that plate being part of the grill. Am I correct in my thinking?

Yes, it will be noticeable. Not as noticeable if you put a Mopar or R/T emblem on there. I put the Charger R/T on there (the bigger one) and it still shows although it's not that noticeable.

Yep, what he said. It'll look pretty strange without anything there at all. I am debating with mine, I have the HEMI emblem that came off the side of my 2012 RAM..shaved the "5.7 Liter" off the bottom and buffed off the black paint. As stated as well, some of the mounting plate is going to show on each side of any emblem but a stock DODGE one.

Finally got my Dodge emblem off and replaced it with a Mopar one

Sweet! Looks great, where did you get it from?
Got it off of eBay, simply search Mopar grille emblem

I had my stick on R/T badge fall off while washing the Rango today. I'm hoping some super glue will stick it on for good.

I opted for gorilla glue when I put my Mopar grille emblem on
