Hello all,

I recently (about 6 months ago) imported a 1998 Durango from japan to the Solomon Islands where I live and run my own business.
Things were going well until about a month ago I started having this problem where the Durango would start fine but when you go to put your foot on the gas the engine dies. If you immediately try to start it again it starts no problem but will die again if the gas is applied. This will happen 6 - 7 times before it will allow you to put it into drive to move off. After the six or seven times the engine warning light comes on and some times it will let you move off but others the problem persists. It has also stalled a number of time going down hills as you ease your foot off the gas pedal. I took it today to my local mechanic and he put the hand held diagnostic on the truck and the fault code P1296.

This problem is driving me crazy as the car conveniently stalls in traffic on single lane roads at about 4 in the afternoon when it is bumper to bumper, the car is full of kids and frozen food slowly defrosting as we sit on the side of the road me cursing the day that I bought a Durango - Somebody help PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe P1296 is loss of +5volts to the MAP sensor, but I don't have a 98-specific code book available.

I'd:
- disconnect, inspect, and reconnect the connectors at the PCM
- disconnect, inspect, and reconnect the connector at the MAP sensor (front of throttle body IIRC)
- replace the MAP sensor

Thanks Tom, refresh my memory what is the PCM? (excuse my ignorance). Is there any other related sensors that may need replacing?

Cheers

PCM is the Powertrain Control Module.. if I recall (man it's been a long time) it is on the right-side wheel well, and has 3 or 4 large connectors going into it.

A bad MAP can certainly cause lousy mileage.. though a '98 Durango isn't going to win any MPG competitions anyway.. If that's the only fault code you have, I'd stick with that short list for now rather than shotgunning parts..

Tom you are right. It is a silver colored metal box on the right front fender well with 3 plugs attached in a row on the front(engine) side. Pull them off and reset them to make sure that they are set tight on the PCM.

While connectors off, check cleanlyness of connector, and make sure no bent or pushed back pins are present.
