I was having some idle issues in DTW, erratic idle, high idle on startup, etc., so I pull the throttle body last night, stripped the sensors off, and gave it a good cleaning. The IAC and the IAC port were VERY nasty! It had some corrosion on the plunger head, so I wiped it carefully with a rag soaked in carb cleaner and then took out my cordless drill with a fine wire brush attachment and carefully cleaned the head. After about 5 minutes, it looked like new! :cheesy:

I reinstalled the sensors, buttoned her up and, after resetting the PCM, started her up. The idle was much better and on the highway this am the MPG is back to normal.

BUT (there's always a but), the battery is borderline. After removing the top charge, she sits at 12.4V and, with lights on, drops to 11.8V and I know this can also cause idle issues. These Optima batteries are driving me insane! They just don't hold up IMHO. But I hate battery corrosion under the hood more I guess. <sigh>

The only reason I still have an Optima is the part about the corrosion. I hate the battery terminal corrosion you get from regular batteries!

Good luck on the Optima and check the date you bought it. Mine crapped out after 2 years and they gave me a brand new one on the spot for no charge. Yours should have a 3 year warranty.

V,

The Duralast Gold battery is the THE way to fly. I've been using them for several years now and have yet to have issue 1. With an 85 month warranty and 3 totally free replacement, I think it's hard to beat for ~$90.

Be sure to keep the top of that battery clean too. I've put voltmeters on one post of a battery and just touched the other lead to the top of the battery and gotten a 12 volt reading from all of the acid and dirt collected on the top of the battery. That's a continual drain on the battery as it sits with the key in your pocket.

rats

Still getting intermittent high idle on startup. :furious:

Does everyone vote battery?

lol

More than likely, but remember the IAC is a stepper motor, like the one that controls the heads on a hard drive, and they do go bad eventually.
