Alright, about 5 months ago the T-case got stuck in 4WD on my '01 SLT+ 5.9L. It's been fine since, but today it got stuck in 4WD again and now won't come back out. Quite honestly I have to say this is the worst Dodge I've owned, nothing but issues with this one.

Obviously it's the electronically actuated 4WD not the AWD. I can turn the truck off, start it back up, turn the knob several times and it refuses to come out of 4WD. I've even shut it off and turned it on in neutral, no difference. It's not an indication issue because it's definitely in 4WD and doesn't like dry pavement.

Any gurus with any ideas? Has anyone ever experienced this? :?

I'm so glad I chose to mod my '99 instead of the '01.

Logik,

In any case, once you get this issue figured out, be sure to exercise your T-case at least once a month. I try to move it in and out of AWD to 4 lock and, if I'm in the right place, I'll even engage 4 low and drive around a bit. Like anything else, using it on a somewhat consistent basis never hurts.

+1 on exercising the T-case modes, gotta do it.

Also, as others have mentioned, you may need to go some distance forward and backwards to get the T-case to change modes RIGHT NOW.

If some patience doesn't solve the problem, report back and I'll stare at the 01 FSM and see what I can see.

I got it out. Fiddling around with it got it to come out, but it wasn't fun. I did try rocking the truck from forward to backwards for a few feet just like I used to have to do on my old '85 Ramcharger, but it still didn't want to come out. Eventually just cycling the switch enough times and it came out while I had it in neutral.

Nah, the truck I wheel in is my '99, I'd be afraid the '01 would leave me stranded. IMO, with the exception of the interiors, the 99-00 trucks are MUCH better than the 01+ (except for the '03s for the better brakes.) The '01+'s IMO drive too much like cars.

In the summer time the '01 doesn't see much 4WD, but in the winter it's usually in 4WD 1-2 times a week and, every month or so, 4LO.

Thanks for the help guys!

What did the indicator lights do when it failed to shift?

FYI, here are the rules the '01 TCCM uses to decide whether it's going to shift for you:

Mode shifts will be allowed regardless of transmission gear or vehicle speed, whenever the following conditions are met:
  • - A change in the Selector switch state indicates that a mode shift has been requested.
    - A valid mode sensor signal is being sensed by the TCCM.
    - Proper transmit/receive messages are occurring on the PCI bus.
    - Ignition key switch is in the RUN position.
Range shifts will be allowed only if all of the following conditions are met:
  • - A change in the Selector Switch state indicating a range shift has been requested.
    - Transmission in NEUTRAL signal must be recognized for at least 1.5 seconds ?100 msec.
    - Proper transmit/receive messages are occurring on the PCI bus.
    - Clutch signal is recognized for 500 msec ? 50 msec (Clutch pedal depressed if a manual transmission).
    - Vehicle speed is less than or equal to 4.8 km/hr (3 miles per hour).
    - Ignition key switch is in the RUN position.
    - A valid mode sensor signal is being sensed by the TCCM.
A shift into transfer case Neutral will be allowed only if all of the following conditions are met:
  • - The recessed Neutral Selection switch has been depressed continuously for 4.0 seconds ?100 msec while all shift conditions have been continuously met.
    - Transmission in NEUTRAL signal recognized from the bus.
    - Clutch signal is recognized from the bus (Clutch pedal depressed if a manual transmission).
    - Proper message transmissions/receptions are occurring on the PCI bus.
    - Vehicle speed is less than or equal to 4.8 km/hr (3 miles per hour).
    - Ignition key switch is in the RUN position, engine off.
    - Foot Brake is applied.
    - A valid mode sensor signal is being sensed by the TCCM.
A shift out of transfer case Neutral will be allowed only if all of the following conditions are met:
  • - The recessed Neutral Selection switch has been depressed continuously for 1.0 seconds ?100 msec while all shift conditions have been continuously met.

WB:
Are you doing this shift " on the fly" or while stopped? The NV 244 T case, can switch from AWD to 4Hi and back at speeds up to 50m mph if I recall correctly. 4LO requires you to be all but stopped. Have you had it serviced recently, or at all?
