Getting a Check Engine light on my '99 D 360. Code read as "Output Speed Sensor Circuit Fault." Can anyone tell me what this is and where to look for it? I can't locate my Haynes manual right now (had to pack a lot of things to get them out of the house for when my mom returned from the hospital after her stem cell transplant), so I was hoping someone could help me out on this.

I also had codes for "Multiple Cylinder Misfires" on cylinders 1,6 and 8. I stopped and picked up new plugs and wires for that.

It easy to replace. It's on the drivers side near the rear of the transmission. A little oil may come out but not much. The part is available fron Autozone etc.

Would that cause my tranny to not shift at WOT if it was bad? My truck bounced off the rev limiter a few days ago and didn't shift into 2nd until after I snapped my foot off the gas.

Yes it'll cause shifting problems if it's bad.

I had to replace mine on my 98D-360. My speedo was acting funny and not registering anything below 10 MPH, ABS light was lit. Make sure when you replace it you get a good "electrical contact" to the tranny case and make sure the switch is seated very well. Mine wasn't seated well and it's like it wasn't' even there. Reseated it and cleaned surface connections and it fixed the prob.

The speedo not working below 10 (and it's below 20 where the cut off is) and the ABS light isn't the same as the above problem. There are two speed sensors, one on the differential (ABS) and one on the transmission. The ABS/speed sensor won't throw a code and won't affect shifting. The above mentioned code is only for the tranny sensor.

You have to get under the truck. There's nothing to remove. There's just one sensor there. Follow the drive shaft back to the transmission It's not far from there. It's sticking down at about a 45 deg angle.

Thanks! I'll have to get it up on ramps or something. I tried to slide under the truck on sunday, but couldn't get under far enough to see much of anything. I'll take another look this weekend and see what I can find.

Here ya go.

The sensor is made of white plastic and screws into the tranny. I don't remember what size socket I used to replace mine but be sure not to "over-tighten" as it's only plastic. My FSM didn't show a specific torque value for it, so I only tighten it up until it bottomed out.

Just thought I'd let you guys know that I successfully changed this tonight (Finally!!)?I oughta charge somebody for 2 quarts of tranny fluid. Whoever said "a little fluid will come out" must have had their truck on a rotisserie or something. I pulled that sensor out and the fluid didn't stop coming until the new sensor was in and my shirt and arm were soaked with fluid. That kinda sucked. I can no longer say it's been 20 years since my mother bathed me (she scrubbed my back to get the trans fluid off.)

Will I have to get this code cleared before the Check Engine light goes off, or will it go off once the sensor is working properly?

You can clear the codes by pulling negative battery cable, turn ignition key to ON for 30 seconds or so. Turn OFF and reconnect cable.

:Bump:

Changed the sensor and finally got the code cleared (didn't want to disconnect the battery, so stopped by AutoZone.) Lasted all of 10 seconds until I was pulling out of the parking lot. Same code. Seems to be shifting better now, but still getting the CE light. Anybody know where all the wires run?

Which sensor did you change? It'd be the sensor on the side of the transmission.

That's what I changed. I'm just wondering if something else might trip this CE code. I'd really like for the CEL to be OFF when I drive, aside from the fact that it's back to shifting funny again. I used to be able to pussy-foot the gas and have the transmission shift at 2000RPM. It's really good on gas that way. Right now it won't shift until around 3000 and in some cases 3500. I'm really trying to take it easy on the thing considering gas is now $3.09/gallon at the cheapest stations in town. :wall:

Only one more day until my car is back on the road and I can get decent mileage?

I don't know what the P code was, but I have two piecse of advice for anyone else that encounters this problem: TAKE OFF THE SKID PLATE TO CHANGE THIS SENSOR AND PUT BOTH OF YOUR RAMPS UNDER THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRUCK. No one told me this and I had the front end up (making all of the tranny fluid run to the back where the sensor is, thus leaking out the hole where the sensor goes) and didn't take the skid plate off. I didn't have a good view of what I was doing and put the sensor in and tightened it down with a ratchet. Since I couldn't see, I didn't know that the sensor was in there crooked. I cross-threaded the sensor and barely got it into the hole. All of my tranny fluid leaked out as I was driving. Luckily I didn't damage the transmission and in the process effectively changed the fluid. On monday I ramped the left wheels, took the skid plate off, saw the problem, corrected it, refilled the fluid, cleared the code and it's been fine since then with no CEL. Thanks for the very vague help, guys. P code available or not, Output Speed Sensor Circuit Fault only applies to 1 P code, so why does it even matter? :?

Has anyone ever considered making a How-To section on the site here, or a listing of the P-codes readily accessible instead of having to search for everything? The BB I use for my car has all of this info under a couple links in the header of the site and eliminate a lot of the questions like this on the site. In the cases where it doesn't eliminate them, they get 1 reply with a link to the how-to and a lock. Makes for a pretty simple solution. ;-)
