I want to change out all the hoses on my 99D 5.9 engine and this is what I was going to get. Let me know if I left anything out?
  • Upper Radiator Hose
    Lower Radiator Hose
    Heater Core Outlet Hose
    Heater Core Inlet Hose
    Bypass Hose
    New Spring Clamps
I'm also want to flush out the heater corer. Can I just remove one of the heater hoses and spray up in there with a water hose, with the lower hose detached of course?

Also, how hard is it to change out the bypass hose? I couldn't find it. :?

thanks

The bypass hose is under the A/C bracket. You have to remove the alternator, swing the compressor out of way, and then remove the A/C bracket.
Sounds like a pain to get to! Are Goodyear hoses a good choice?

Goodyear is good, Gates is better IMHO. Another thing, DO NOT reuse the factory clamps. Use new ones.
Do the clamps weaken over time? I'll take a look at the Gates hoses as well, thanks!

Get the better stainless screw clamps. Much easier to work with and are re-usable.

Maybe some of you know this, but my neighbor (mechanic) showed me a special tool used to squeeze the factory spring clamps that makes it a lot easier to remove them. I'd always used vise grips? which can be a PITA in some areas.

Over time and millions of heat/cool cycles the spring style clamp does loose some of it's strength. As stated, there's a specific pair of pliers to remove them without destroying your hands. Good luck.

well, got the new hoses ordered from Rockauto, I got the upper and lower in Goodyear and the heater hoses and all in Gates. brand the Gates upper and lower were out of stock when I ordered, so I guess I got a little bit of 2 good brands! still trying to locate those spring clamps, is there a online source to get those? I know the heater hose ones are 5/8", anyone know what the size of the radiator ones are?

Nobody really uses the spring clamps but the dealer. All other shops tend toward the screw style clamp as they're easier to work with, are reusable, no special tools are needed, and they're readily available anywhere.

Well the Goodyear hose wasn't molded right so I had to get a Gates upper hose. One question though. The OEM and the Goodyear both had that webbing material to protect the hose, I guess that's what it's for :?, but the Gates didn't have it. Is it necessary to have that? If it is, I'll grab an OEM one. Thanks!

I just read the pre post and was saying to myself? NO!!

Upper and lower are DEALER OEM STOCK ONLY parts. There are ZERO aftermarket ones that get them right. PLUS, the stockers are SUPERIOR quality with internal spring supports, etc.

Are the heater hoses ok to get aftermarket or OEM for them as well?

I actually used an aftermarket lower hose (from O'Reilly) and just put the spring from the old hose in it myself. Molded fine from what I could tell, lined up and slid on with no issues. But of course when Indy and his 225,000 miles speak, it's wise to listen.

Tough game today Indy, rough start to the season.

For the 5.2/5.9 aftermarket hoses aren't critical. For the 4.7, it's a different story for the upper hose due to the radiator cap being involved. As for heater hoses, it's generally a straight run of 5/8" or 3/4" hose and new clamps. Always use new clamps if using spring clamps. Screw clamps are re-usable, same for radiator hoses.

Thanks for the confidence shout-out my friend.

In terms of my Colts? did they play today?

I tried an aftermarket lower hose from Pep Boys. The angles weren't molded correctly and it didn't fit. The Upper fit OK, but not as well as the OEM. I then got a dealer lower and it was the same price as the parts store hose.

Moving the AC/Alternator bracket is easy, but I don't know how easy it is to get the hose out. It's short and goes into the back of the pump. I replaced it with the pump so that wasn't too bad, but I'm not sure about doing it by itself.
