Most Ds are 4 wheel ABS. IIRC, only 98-99s were 2 wheel ABS.

With that said, it's the rear wheels you want to freely spin to avoid sliding out of control. The fronts can be locked up and still push in a forward direction without fishtailing left or right behind the auto.

Actually not true?I have 2 wheel ABS on my 01.
RWABS (just backs) allows full steering when rear slides out during lockup. The only problem is no Gen 1 D other than the 03 has good enough rear brake grab to make a difference.
For the record, I actually hate all ABS.

As mentioned, my 00 has RWABS also and I find it completely useless. It does nothing to help stop in slippery conditions. Maybe it helps to reduce stopping distance in dry, ideal conditions but definitely not in poor conditions. By the time the ABS kicks in for the rears, the front is already locked up and all steering capability is lost. It should have had the ABS on the front, allowing steering. I can control a slide from the rear as long as I have front steering.
IMO, I love ABS. All my cars but my first (a 79 Mustang) had it and I'm used to it. It does take some getting used to the weird pulsing feedback in the pedal when it kicks in, but that's just like anything. You have to get used to it and expect it. Every winter, I head to a big parking lot after a snow and kick in the ABS to "re-acclimate" myself to the feeling. The key to ABS is NOT to let off the pedal when it kicks in but just keep even pressure and let the system do the work.

So, is there a way to convert to 4WABS for our Ds?

Pretty big job. need to replace both front wheel bearings, the wiring harness is quite different, the brake plumbing up front is quite different, and you need the new HCU/CAB.

So while anything is possible, it seems like this wouldn't be worth the effort?

The reason 2 wheel is standard is that the Durango is based off the Dakota. The Government mandated a long while ago that all pickups must be equipped with rear ABS. Pickups are light in the rear and tend to lock up the rear tires easily. You'll find that most pickup based SUVs have rear ABS. 4 wheel was optional and I ordered mine with 4 wheel ABS.

Here's someone looking to convert to 4 wheel www.dakota-durango.com/forum/showthread.php?t=104040 & www.dodgetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=281512

Apparently the wiring harness is the same.

Most are 2 wheel. 4 wheel was optional in 99.
