Did a heater core back flush, clear as vodka running out both sides of the tube. Also replaced a dead 180 tstat with a 195. Engine running nice and hot, but I'm still blowing out rather cool air. It's -9°F where I'm at right now, but it still seems like I should be getting way more heat. Any suggestions?

At -9, cold is cold.

Place a piece of cardboard about 1/2 the size of the radiator right in front of it to block some air flow. If it gets too hot on the gauge, stop and tear a piece off the cardboard. Repeat until you get to the driving temp on the gauge you're looking for.

Once the engine temp is up where you want it, the temp to air ratio inside the D is simply a function of allowing enough time to raise the larger air space inside.

On my '99, I found that using Water Wetter helped the heater output somewhat on really cold days. But the early Gen-1's had pretty marginal heat anyway.

I'm not understanding the adjustment. If I pull the knob out and rotate it, it doesn't press back in at the 1 o'clock position.

I'll definitely have to try this. lol Replacing my t-stat and flushing the heater core helped a lot, it got a lot of gunk out. It heats better but not good enough for northern Iowa next month. lol

I recall that it took me several tries on my '99 to figure out what the procedure really wanted you to do.

And, unfortunately, it's been so long that I've forgotten.

Not that it takes all that long these days.

I don't get it either but try this:<ul>[*]Rotate the knob to 12 o'clock.[*]Pull it almost off but not quite.[*]Turn it about 4 or 5 clicks past the full heat position to almost 6 o'clock.[/list]See how good your heater works there. Mines amazing! I have my knob semi popped out right now and guess that's what I've got to do till I have time to figure it out.
