? until a 2000 D stocker alternator stops working?

Everything was fine and then "Check Gauges" shows up on the dash. Voltage was down on the post at 8 Amps. I pulled over and checked the battery, belt, etc? all looked good. Started the D back up and the needle rose to almost 12 Amps. Normal amperage on the gauge is a tad over 14 Amps. All was fine when I was driving along and then it was done. I found that interesting.

A quick call to Pres Steve and we agreed that as it heats back up, output was failing. Steve looked up the replacement options for me (117Amps and 136Amps are available for the 2000 Durango) and I was off to AutoZone for a new one. (Side note, 160 Amp alts are D 2001+ with a different wiring plug.) Thank you for the phone assistance and research my friend!!

I turned off the radio etc and running on battery only plus whatever was getting out of the alternator, the D was ran fine. Even at interstate speeds, no drivability issues were noticed other than 8 Amps on the bottom of the gauge for the 20+ miles home.

So, AutoZone had a lifetime warranty Denso 136 Amp for $145, another $100 core charge and $29 for a new Goodyear Gatorback belt. They do have an instant 20% off the belt with a Alt/Water Pump/PS Pump purchase.

Two leisure install hours later with a helper here and there for an extra hand and all is back up and running fine at 14+ Amps on the gauge. The replacement alternator had a different rear 'cap' on the back side made of plastic. The stocker has a small plastic section where the plug goes and from there the rest of the rear was under a thin metal cap.

Sorry I forgot to take side by sides prior to the install. I did trash the little AC bracket that wraps along the lines there by the alt. Anyone run without theirs? I may or may not replace it.

+245,000 miles and my stock alternator (136 amp model) is still going just fine (probably because I didn't load my D down with lots of "power hungry" aftermarket stereo/video gear :cheesy:)
Dang Indy, you should be asking for a refund. Yours pooped out over 45000 miles too soon!

 :p

Having any accessory last that long says something about how our vehicles are built. Quite the change from the early to mid eighties cars. Many more happy miles ahead Rob, and to all of us proud D owners.

Pres? yours is a 160 Amp?

Al and I have the 136 stocker as the max amperage. I'd imagine with any draw whether it's normal usage or higher to support stereo gear, the more amps the better.

I'm very pleased with the life I achieved out of the stocker. No one can argue about that for sure. As DCD mentioned, parts that last longer than others entire cars =

Mine came with a 160 Amp stock. Also, remember that I had a custom built 225 amp one but it caused too much engine whine so I returned it.

I have roughly 183,000 everything is stock and running fine. I did finally have to put in a new tranny at about 177,000 but I bought my D used with 77,000 on it and I don't think the previous owner took care of any maintenance on anything before I bought it.

Maintenance is huge when it comes to putting good miles on. I had 140,000 on my 03 D when it was totaled and all I ever did was change brake pads twice and tires once. I kept up on all maintenance, oil changes, tire rotation, etc. I got 87,000 miles on the original tires! It even still had the original belt and battery in it. Keep up on maintenance and these things will go forever.
