    Acceleration Hesitation Cause

I have my 2018 R/T at the dealership to look at a few issues. One of the things I mentioned is that I experienced some hesitation when accelerating with half-throttle or more. It is not severe but definitely noticeable. I thought maybe it was, for lack of a better term VVT kicking in [yo]. Someone has since corrected me that VVT, unlike VTEC, is a cam phase system and should not have a noticeable 'kick-in'.

They took it for a drive and this is what I was told:

With traction control on, I am only getting 85% of the Hemi's potential power. The feeling I'm noticing, and apparently they noticed too, is the traction control intervening and changing the distribution of power front to back. I asked if the 5.7L actually had enough power at half throttle from a roll, on dry asphalt, to justify the intervention of traction control. I told told yes, absolutely.

I am scheduled to pick my Durango up tomorrow (8/27). Can someone confirm or deny the information they gave me above?

Your dealer is making stuff up.

Exactly what does it feel like?

You can turn the the TSC and ESC partially off and see if it feels any different..
Partial off: momentary press of the ESC button.

SRTs can turn TCS/ESC totally off by holding the ESC button while stopped in track mode, apparently. I don't think that works for non-SRTs.

When I give it half throttle or more there's a jerkiness at lower RPM occasionally. As it reaches higher RPM (4-5K) there's a slight hesitation and then it pulls strong from there to the shift. That's why I thought, in my total ignorance, that I was feeling the move to a secondary set of cam lobes.

I'm thinking half-throttle is confusing the transmission and causing it it to search for the right gear.
    Just a thought.

My '14 GC does that, minus the hesitation.. at WOT something definitely kicks in when it is winding out in 1st gear, I've always attributed that to the VVT.

Is it anything like what's described in this thread by chance?

I agree, the dealer is BSing you. The traction has nothing to do with what your having an issue with. The traction control does not limit power, unless you are breaking traction. So if your doing a 25mph roll and stomp on the gas, traction control is meaningless, unless of course it's snowing or raining LOL!

Thank you jfire! That is exactly what I'm talking about. It has subtle hesitation and then at the upper ranges it seems to wake up. That thread was never resolved but it's nice to know I'm not crazy. Well, not completely crazy.

    LOL!

I'm taking mine in a couple of weeks for a separate issue, and I'm going to ask about this as well. I'm suspecting it won't be resolved, but can't hurt to ask, maybe someone out there has an answer.

So on the issue itself, it sounds like it's somewhat normal. At the minimum I'm not alone.

What gets me is the whole bloated explanation of the traction control, reduced engine power, etc. from the dealership. There was also some mention of MDS because the Service Manager was saying something about how the MDS deactivation on a Hellcat is especially noticeable because of all the horsepower.

I don't expect every tech to know every detail of every model but it's also OK to say "I don't know, let me check into that for you". Misleading a customer, intentional or not, is never a good idea.

Turn you eco off, traction off and use manual shifting one at the time to see what you get.
