The title kind of says it all, I now have 1,000 miles on my DDSRT and have filled the tank 3x so far. All three times I had problems actually getting the gas pump to work. I think Dodge's gas tank system which does not use a gas cap creates some kind of back pressure that triggers gas pumps to shut off.

My very first tank of gas I had to keep twisting the filler handle and decreasing the pump's fuel flow because it kept cutting off before the tank was full. It took a lot of twisting and turning along with adjusting the flow to find the sweet spot where the gas pump would not cut off. I did not think anything of it and just figured it was the gas station's fault.

My second tank of gas I just set the pump and used the little lever to automatically fill the tank. A few miles after I left the gas station I noticed that the tank was only 75% full, but again thought it was just a fluke. Yesterday though, I was on E and really needed a full tank of gas. So I started pumping and the pump simply would not stop shutting off. This is the same gas station that I have been coming to for over 10yrs with other cars and never had this problem. It took about 20-30 attempts with twisting the pump handle, adjusting the nozzle, and adjusting the flow to finally get the pump to actually fill the tank.

At this point, I've decided it has to be the capless system causing some kind of back pressure that triggers the pump to shut off. I have never had this problem with any car I've owned and I'm pretty sure any dealership I take it to will look at me like I'm crazy. Has anyone else had this problem? I recently drove a rental Jeep Grand Cherokee and had the exact same problem; the pump kept shutting off, and the JGC had the same capless fuel tank.

I used to encounter this with my Mustang from time to time, but have not had an issue with the Durango.
Seemed to me some pump nozzles were more sensitive than others (perhaps old & worn out ??).

I've had this same issue with my truck.....but it's only been at one station. But it happens every time I get gas at this particular gas station. I have to turn the nozzle to the side and then it pumps fine as long as I don't try and lock it on full blast.

Watch this video, it explains some problems with the return line to the gas tank. I know your Durango is new, but maybe there is a kink in the line.

My 14 RT seems to do it also form time to time at different gas stations. Usually pumping sideways or upside down fixes the problem. Seems to be more frequent at Costco gas stations

i changed stations works fine now
Yep. I only had this problem twice on my '17DD. And both times, I went to a different pump at the same station, got gas with no problems. I went in and reported the defective nozzle to the CSR. Sometimes, you can spot a pump with a bad nozzle, by a stronger than normal gas smell, and puddles, or stains on the deck around the pump. I always let them know inside because they are more than annoying.. They are illegal.

For fill up number 4 and 5 I figured out if I turn the pump clockwise until my hand is hitting the gas door and hold it just like that it does not cut off. If it hangs straight down it will cutoff before it is full. If it is turned counter clockwise at all it will shut off almost immediately. Still a very annoying problem; i don't see how they could have possibly screwed up something so simple, but at least now I think I have a way to fill up the tank.

Hey all; new here. I just picked up a 2015 Durango Limited last week and had to fill up for the first time today. I felt like an idiot as I couldn’t fill up the tank lol. Hopefully this isn’t an every pump issue for me.

It is for me. I recently drove from Boston to Florida and back, and had the issue at every gas station I used (as well as various local stations). I have to hold the handle upside down to get fuel to flow without kicking off prematurely. I will be adding this to my list for next dealer visit.

First fill up for me today and worked like a champ. I will say that has happened to me in my past Durango a couple of times, as well as my Charger and Grand Cherokee SRT8s. Definitely not a continuous problem though.

I have had a ‘16 with no problem, a ‘17 with an issue and an ‘18 that is also a pita to fill up.
The lead service tech at my dealership mentioned that there is a star case open to have engineering resolve the issue. He said they were hoping to have a fix in March. I had the filler line replaced on my ‘17 and that helped the issue, I still have to turn the filler to a horizontal position for it to work.

Any update on a fix for this from the dealers/manufacturer? Have a 2018 DDSRT and have been to 5 different gas stations (3 brand new stations and 2 older) and it will not fill up unless you twist the nozel upside down and hold it there, which comes close to or actually does touch the paint with the nozel (will eventually scratch up the paint over time).
